Reflection On My Writing

Looking back at my diagnostic essay, I recognize a few core things that I wanted to improve upon during this course. First off was building my research skills. I have only written a few research papers throughout my writing career so it was not exactly easy finding the best research to support my topic. Throughout the whole process of this argumentative essay I have learned a variety of research tips that I will be able to use all through life. I’ve noticed that research is all about planning time ahead to collect articles, saving the articles, annotating and relating the articles to each other, and citing as you go. The activity that really helped me with turning my annotated bibliographies into a rough outline with the rainbow outline. Because of this, it was significantly easier for me to turn the rainbow outline into the rough draft. I have always been a very visual person so I loved this idea of highlighting parts to organize what sources fit into the main essay ideas. I remember in my WRD 103 diagnostic essay I wrote that I wanted to work on turning my ideas into words, but needed a jolt to get me started. The process of getting words started on the page was always my biggest obstacle in writing and I feel like the rainbow outline was the perfect solution for this. In WRD 103 we had to write four different types of genres that were all directed towards different known audiences. But in WRD 104, I really struggled with thinking about who I was writing my essay for since it was different for each student’s topics. I realized half way through the writing process I was not sure exactly who I was trying to convince with my argument. The activity that really helped me was the audience profile. It really benefited me to open a document and ask myself questions like “who already cares?” or “who should care?”. Because it was so helpful, I am going to keep this document for future argumentative essays so I can make myself a similar
