James Robert "Radio" Kennedy, an 18-year-old man with mental disabilities, pushes a shopping cart along the streets daily, he often passes by a high school football team 's trainings. One day he catches the attention of the head coach of the team. Radio starts attending T.L Hanna High School in Anderson, South Carolina. Their friendship extends over several decades where radio changes from a shy, tormented boy into an inspiring man who serves great for the community.
Radio has to deal with extreme adversity whilst trying to fit into a new school and adapt to new surroundings, at his new school he has to deal with everyone judging him straight away due to him being intellectually challenged. The idea behind this is that prejudice knows no age, at the start of the movie Radio is entering the town pushing a shopping cart and a woman pulls her daughter away from him because he 's african american and disabled. It could be they have different beliefs or that they are at different levels of education. No matter what the difference, we need to treat everyone with respect and accept people for who they are. In ‘Radio’ differences are quite common. Radio is a black young man that has an intellectual disability. He is arrested because he is black and thought to be stealing. Profiling the education has given up on him and in grade 11 he finally learns to write his name. He goes to an all black church which is different than most of his classmates and the adults within the community, but Radio is similar to many. He likes Takeaways, French fries, football, and doing the right thing. Radio is also a great help on the football team, often seen shooting out plays and even sticks up for his fellow teammates when he has been tricked by
