Reflection I The article that I have chosen to reflect upon was written by David Rose and Nicole Strangman. The title of the article is “Universal Design for Learning: Meeting the Challenge of Individual Learning Differences Through a Neurocognitive Perspective”. This article describes why the “one size fits all” approach to curriculum is the reason why many students are not learning as well as they could. The authors believe that increasing how well the students learn will require a different approach to the curriculum that includes the Universal Design for Learning framework to consider the different learning styles of the individual learners. The Universal Design for Learning is a researched based approach to curriculum aiming to include a more flexible and technology rich curriculum that provides students with options to learn based on their individual needs. Universal Design for Learning is a network based perspective on …show more content…
According to Rose and Strangman (2007), “The UDL framework is grounded in cognitive and neural perspectives on learning” (p. 382). The three learner networks included in the UDL framework are recognition networks, strategic networks, and affective networks. These different learner networks can be addressed in the classroom by using the three principles mentioned in this article: providing flexible means of representation, providing flexible strategic support, and providing flexible means of engagement. This article was an introduction to the Universal Design for Learning framework considering the date the article was written was 2007. Since I have started my licensure/education classes, I have been hearing how the state of Mississippi is really starting to implement the UDL framework in its’ classrooms. I have even been trained on how to use UDL in my future
