ICC9K1 Personal cultural biases and differences that affect one’s teaching. - Competency 4 I am very careful to be respectful of the various cultures and differences among the students at my school, so this does not impact my teaching. I differentiate my instruction in order to accommodate the needs. I am in a school with students from a wide range of countries.
Point 1: Sociolinguistics (8) 174w When it comes to reading, every student has different experiences in regards to what they are interested in reading. Working with students that are extremely diverse sociocultural theory addresses the importance of incorporate reading that students can relate to culturally. Implementing culturally diverse material, students begin to reflect with the story that they are reading and they are motivated to read because they are becoming part of the story. By implementing different cultures books, they are expanding their knowledge of other cultures that they are not familiar or were never aware. Adapting to students culture is important for a teacher to do, especially when teaching a diverse school because making those personal connections are crucial to building relationship with the students and their community.
The first two chapters of this book deal with the mindset that we as teachers must have in incorporating the framework and pedagogy into our classrooms. In becoming a culturally responsive teacher you must look at validation, affirmation, building, and bridging. In validation, we have a responsibility to our students to legitimize their culture and language. In being a teacher, rapport I with your students is critical in your success for reaching your students.
How can we become cultural competent? We can become cultural competent by first understanding our own culture and believes. Then we have to be aware that there are other people with different cultures and values, but that does not mean they are wrong. Finally, we need to treat other with respect regardless of our different point of views.
Understanding your personal biases and cultural values is the first area. Such as growing up I always had a deep fear of African Americans. This was because I had a subconscious bias against them because my father had always told me that African American’s would hurt me because I was a European American female. Also culturally, European Americans tend to express opinions that African Americans are criminals, lazy, and beneath European Americans. One way that I will work to increase my cultural competence in this area is when I am placed in an uncomfortable situation, such as a discussion about racism, I will try and appreciate the difference between others and myself.
As soon as you understand more about a person, you can be more empathetic and understanding of different cultures. I come from a Hispanic and German background so I have had the chance to enjoy multiple cultures already. Yet, experiencing and learning about new cultures is important to create better more understanding
I observed the ELL class on Friday October 11th, 2015. The observation was done at Strawberry Point School in the Mill Valley District for 30 minutes with three English Learners from Kindergarten, which one child is Danish and two children are Koreans. The more information I learn about this issue, the more surprised I am that our society still exhibits bias, because as much as the United States preaches about equality, it appears as if society has segregation in minor ways. Although the debate between whether there are biased questions on the SATs or not seems to favor that there aren’t by popular opinions, there is still biased behavior occurring in school systems that prevent certain groups of students from getting the proper resources needed. Because I would like to work in an low-income area, which most likely would contain minorities, as a teacher I would make the effort to help those students get the sufficient help needed. This motivates me to become a part of the education field, because caring teachers are much needed in area like this.
Prescription drug (RX drug) advertising (ads) on television, newspapers, and magazines should be banned in the United States. Due to many reasons, including the economic and physical stress it sets on consumers who rely on prescription medications everyday. Drug prices are on the rise, as they need to support the hefty funding for nationwide commercials at prime times. RX drug ads are seen on a constant loop in American TV. Washington Post writer, Justin Moyer’s article American Medical Association Urges Ban on TV Drug Ads, states that DTC (direct to consumer) ads spending has increased by 30% to a $4.5 billion industry, resulting in a 5% increase in actual RX drugs in 2015.

Without the knowledge of what culture is and does, we as a society would be lost. In the essay, “An Indian Father’s Plea” by Robert Lake, the author takes to explain to his audience that your culture can greatly impact your perspective of others. For example, when the teacher Wind-Wolf a slow learner, the father writes a letter explaining why wind-wolf is not, but in fact the opposite. The author said “If you ask him how many months there are in a year he will probably tell you 13. He will respond this way not because he does not know how to count, but because he was taught by our traditional people.”
The United States is a place of freedom. We are a mixing pot that unifies as one. Many religions, cultures, and languages make their home in the Unites States. Many foreigners see the U.S. as an opportunity to seek better lives and education, but when it comes to foreigners and native-born non-English speakers that do not yet know English, it becomes a little more difficult to go about an average day let alone make a better future. Children in school often become English Language Learners, or ELL, to assimilate to the American standards.
This is accomplished by acknowledging similar experiences between different ethnic backgrounds and creating a new common ground that can be build on. Behavioural and cognitive perspectives focus on the solo learner. Whereas the socio-cultural perspective sees learning as a social activity and acknowledges how peer norms, social supports, knowledgeable people, and cultural and historical circumstances (Conway,
