1. One thing I did not expect as a young man during my journey in the Coast Guard, whether 4 years or 30, that I would have the privilege to meet some great leaders. In Marietta, tourism plays a large role. To help bring tourists in the Marietta-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau promotes the town through various forms of advertisement. This semester I volunteered at this organization, assisting with anything they need to promote events in Marietta and increase tourism. My jobs was to help with tasks that would help produce the annual visitors guide. Leadership Trait Questionnaire The Leadership Trait Questionnaire (LTQ) showed that I lack in self-confidence, self-assurance, and feel that I lack in insight. I show strength in determination, being outgoing, friendly, empathetic and sensitive, I rated myself as fours in these categories and a five in the outgoing category (Northouse, 2016). The company’s board of directors decided that they needed a person from outside of the company, who had no connection and loyalty to previous vision, and no affiliation with previous management team. In my opinion, the company owners hired Loescher for a specific purpose to change the overall team perception of how work is supposed to be done.
Critical Review of Leadership Theories There have been a variety of theorists who have tried to understand how good leaders acquire their skills and whether the components which make up a successful leader are hereditary or learned. Many Studies have been made using twins to identify that about forty percent of differences in personality are hereditary. (Vernon et al., 1998) From this we can see that it is not only a matter of whether a person in born with these skills but one must also build on them to become a successful leader.
Throughout my entire life I have been constantly learning and improving a wide range of personal and social leadership skills, especially in these most recent few years of middle school and high school. These skills have not only helped me to get where I am today, but have also become a huge influence for my personality and overall perception of the world around me. These skills have helped me to build relationships, gain experience and opportunities, improve my personal outlook, and change my entire approach to everything I do in a positive way. But I know it does not stop there. It is never truly possible to fully possess a leadership skill in its entirety.
Through self-reflection and academic readings, I have discovered that I identify with three different leadership theories. During the first meeting in a Strength Based Leadership class, we were asked to write our leadership history. The class then began an ongoing exploration of various leadership theories. Upon reviewing my leadership history from the first class and synthesizing the information from the theories that were examined, I discovered that I most resonate with the Trait Leadership Theory, the Skills Leadership Theory, and the Path-Goal Leadership theory. These theories are leader focused, describing the process and techniques a leader uses to accomplish goals.
In this course I discovered to better understand the beliefs of others and understand how what you do can impact others. Self-awareness is a huge part of it is having a clear perception of your personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions. Self-Awareness allows you to understand other people, how they perceive you, your attitude and your responses to them in the moment. Motivating others requires making others feel understood, leadership is not just a cliché about leading by example or other vague tenet, it involves more interaction and engagement. Most importantly, since the contents of this course are largely different from what I have learned in my major courses. I regard this as a rare opportunity for me to take on some new challenges, and I would like to take a chance to develop my leadership skills. To me, it is hard to define what leadership is, especially in one sentence, but I agree with you that leadership is the action of leading others or an organization. I feel like it is when someone steps up and goes into the unknown as well. It is also important to mention that it is never just one single person.
