Introduction
An interview can be seen as an exchange of verbal and non-verbal communication between two people interacting with each other (Northouse & Northouse, 1998: 164). Furthermore an interview aims to contribute to patients’ ability to identify personal issues and concerns and help them work through it. Reflecting on my future as a healthcare professional has made me realise the role of verbal and non-verbal communication in ensuring empathy in an interview. I have discussed verbal and non-verbal communication and I have identified the interview phases apparent within the given scenario. I have described the verbal and non-verbal communication used by the HP to convey empathy and evaluated the value in this. I have learnt that as I emerging IHP I must strive to empathise and not sympathise and that the patient-professional relationship is far reaching; including my “foot prints” on social
