When I began COMM LL041, I set some very attainable goals for myself, so that I was not overwhelmed. Since this was my first full course load of learning in ten years, I believed that I should keep myself accountable and strive for nothing but success. As stated in my About Me paragraph that was completed as in class assignment, my goals were as follows; to become a more complete writer, a proficient speaker and listener, as well as to accurately identify and use the resources that Mohawk College has available for students. I strongly believe that I have met my goals, albeit with a very steep learning curve. In terms of style, I was not concerned, as I have been able to correctly follow the outline for different types of writing. Creating content for my writing was also of not much concern. I quite enjoy debating and conversation. I understand that if I want to create a clear and concise argument, I need to use accurate and effective information to strengthen my argument. My greatest weaknesses in writing were my grammar, as previously stated and structure. As I learned in COMM, transitional components to writing are vital. When I began the course, I used too many simple sentences. I always believed that simple writing was the most effective. Working in hospitality for ten years, writing simple statements and clearly portraying information worked the best for me. I believed that if I wrote too elaborately; with too much flair, I would lose the attention of the recipient. It was also of great concern to me that I make writing; many times in the form of memos and emails, easy to read and not lose any information in translation. This was a misconception which I let affect my writing. It took quite a bit of time to broaden my structure and become comfortable writing more elaborately. The way that Malcolm Gladwell wrote in, How To Be a Success, was very refreshing. It is meticulously written; both efficient and elaborate. I quite enjoyed the reading, as well as the message. As previously stated, I enjoy conversation. It is for this reason I believe that my favourite style of writing is persuasive. I relish coaxing people to see things my way, and completing persuasive writing assignments has strengthened my skills to harness the skill of persuasion.
