In the “Anything Can Happen With Police Around”: Urban Youth Evaluate Strategies of Surveillance in Public Places,” Michelle Fine and his comrades were inspired to conduct a survey over one of the major social issues - how authority figures use a person’s racial identity as a key factor in determining how to enforce laws and how the surveillance is problematic in public space. In the beginning of the article, she used the existed survey reports to support and justify their purpose to perform this survey. The survey analyzed urban youth interactions with authority figures, comprising police, educators, social workers and security guards.
William Gass’s writes in his essay The Art of Self, discusses how “minorities should be promoted to major, and how sects gain possession of the holy” (43). This means that minorities deserve more respect and power than what they receive. I was so excited to begin high school and attend the same school my father and uncles had attended. But, the beginning of my high school career was very difficult and challenging for me. In the beginning of my freshman year, I had a very hard time finding a group of friends that I could trust. The idea of popularity drowned me when I entered high school and I began to loose myself. I had a hard time focusing on my studies and this caused my grades to plummet.
We’re constantly being influences by our surrounding. Usually, our parent’s cultural background plays a significant part in shaping who we are. On the other hand, co-cultures also promote their own set of values which could easily shape our ideas about certain matters as well. These components are a part of how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive too. Growing in a Mexican household allowed me to be exposed to more family orientated events that included music, food and dancing.
There is no doubt that now a day the main concern in todays world is discrimination towards the Hispanics. ‘’In a study conducted by Rutgers University, 22% of Hispanic/Latino workers reported experiencing workplace discrimination, compared to only 6% of whites’’. Discrimination towards Hispanic race is a big social injustice that affects the Hispanic because they have hard time getting benefits in a job and lack of knowing English as there Second language. I believe no one should be judged by there appearance but by they’re potential. In other words, its not right for people that come here for better opportunity’s to reach there potential and being denied because there not us citizens.
I believe that the Latino American population during the twenty centuries faced severe discrimination while fighting for their civil liberties, and still are, in the hopes of proper enfranchisement and suffrage. All of these words are example of what outsiders feel like or what outsiders are.
As children, we were taught to treat others as we wished to be treated. We were taught to love and value one another, we were taught morals. However, as time passed, a growing hatred consumed us.
