The book American Reformers, 1815-1860 by Ronald G. Waters was originally published in 1978 by Hill and Wang publishing company. This book describes the reformation that took place in America, its affects, and what was necessary to get the word out about its ideas. The reformation was an important step in the development of the idea that the negative aspect of a nation’s society could be done away with through an individual’s endeavors. The first chapter of the book deals with how economics, transportation revolution, and politics played a part in the antebellum reformation. It explained how reformers felt about America’s immoral leaders and the laws that they thought would make Americans “behave.”
1.) Three examples of the reversal of Progressive reforms in the 1920s is the Republicans serving the public through cooperation’s and big businesses, public resources being exploited for profit, and the U.S. going back to their traditional foreign policy. 2.) The U.S. tariff policies in the 1920s created long-term and global problems in the sense that since the U.S. increased their tariffs the other countries did the same to us and hurt the American goods while also hurting the products of European countries. 3.)
During the 1800’s, those who saw social prejudice or corruption started many reform movements to correct the difficulties in America. The Second Great Awakening really helped shape the United States into a religious nation and paved the way through the reform movements, while stressing individual choice that caused an uprising in denominations leading to followers by the masses. Antislavery abolitionism became a movement mostly because of influence from the religious revival that was taking place, and demonstrating to all of those religious that slavery is a sin. Reformists of the antislavery movement transformed their thoughts forward of equality to all people, no matter their race.
The progressive reforms during the period of 1890-1915 in the areas of urban life, industrial conditions and politics were mixed successes, with some reforms working well and others not, but were overall largely successful. Industrial conditions, urban life, and politics were all big contributors in the progressive reform period. With these failures occurred in these areas too. Success wasn’t always the direction they were going. Even though most of the time problems with urban life, working conditions, and politics caused more problems than they fixed, the progressive reform was the most successful reform in the politics area due to their overriding concern for the system and the relationship they shared within themselves.
To what extent did reform movements in the United States from 1825 to 1850 seek to expand democratic ideals? From 1825-1850 America was on the verge to Manifest it’s destiny as a national super power. From the increased industrialization of the north, to the social changes in the south, and to the expansion to the west, America finally took its first steps to become a self-sufficient country. Important events such as The Second Great Awakening and the Transportation Revolution occurred during this time.
In the 18th century, during the years of 1825 to 1850 America was going through Reform movements. The Reform movement sought to expand democratic ideals in the United States. The Reform movement had social, economic and political changes or events in America. Out of all of these three things, the Reform movement had a lot more social changes and events than the other two. As the Reform movement was more of a social movement that aim to make gradual changes in society or at least some parts of society.
Reforms of the Mid-1800s The 1800s was a busy century for America. From the abolishment of slavery, to technology advancements such as the first sewing machine. But with the Second Great Awakening and new moral values, came new ideas for the government and overall society. The main reforms were temperance, prison, education, and Women's’ education. All of these have lead to good advancements in society, but also come with drawbacks.
During the 1800s, Activists promoted reforms in attempt to change the American society. They tried to make reforms to eliminate social problems and voice out for minorities like women and slaves. However, not all reforms had successfully united the nation, some might even cause unnecessary separation. For instance, the new wave of immigrants sparked prejudice and discrimination in the society.
The reform movements in the United States can be assessed by analyzing three reformations or movements: The abolitionist movement, the women’s rights movement, and the equality of education reformation. The women’s rights movement, educational reform, and abolitionist movements played a vital role in the expansion of democratic ideals from 1825-1855 by pushing for equality and freedom

In the late 1800’s to early 1900’s like today people were displeased with the way things were being handled. Although people back then suffered many more and much more different situations, one of these was the fact that people were all using the same bathroom and it was in the street. The way these problems got handled were with reforms and acts that helped to make life more effective and easier. One of the first reforms was reforming the workplace which, led to child labor laws and better working conditions for women. Housing reforms led to lights in all public hallways and one bathroom for every two families in a building.
Reformation is an essential part of American history. It is the abiltiy to change ineffective or outdated structures of society. Reform movements during the Antebellum Movement,and the Civil Rights Movement are examples of reactions to injustices. Social Conservatives that are complacent attempt resist these changes. Reform movements have led to the Government to have more active role in society.
One problem still stood and that was that many children did not have any access to education. A Massachusetts lawyer by the name of Horace Mann, led movements to try to create new common schools for all children. Mann believed that available public education for children of every social class would revive social equality and give them an equal chance to excel in social mobility. These schools would also keep society in order by disciplining children and building their individual character and teaching them to obey authority. The Constitutions’ Predecessor The United States of America had not always had a strong Constitution to govern the people. No, in fact, it was quite the opposite. In 1781, six years before our current Constitution was ratified, the United States had a different set of guidelines entirely called the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation were a short lived, ineffective rough draft version of the constitution we have now. With the articles calling the shots each state that was a part of the confederation was fully independent and had a frail central government.
Through the education, prison, and Temperance movements, the Antebellum time period prior to the Civil War introduced many democratic ideals that we now hold dear, ranging from public education to fair mental healthcare. Horace Mann, the leader of the education reforms, sought to provide public education to all citizens, as his state of Massachusetts was heavily focused on enhancing education, according to Document #3. Since before the United States became its own independent nation, Puritan beliefs included an emphasis on education, a clear precursor to this time period. From the implementation of schools with the Old Deluder Act, to the current education reform, the education system was in need of a reform in order to be made available to all — Mann’s main point he was trying to convey. As with the Temperance Movement, the banning of alcohol sparked wild controversy.
