Reggaeton music was originated in panama in the decade of 1970, by 1990 it was spread to Puerto Rico. Reggaeton music has a mixture of Jamaican and Latin American influences, blended with Hip Hop and Electronic beats. Reggaeton usually incorporates rapping in Spanish or English, and its similar lyrical structure to Hip Hop has caused some controversy due to the use of sexual innuendo and explicit lyrics in some of the music (Stephens, n.d.). Reggaeton music not only incites sexism towards women, but also incites men to believe they can degrade women, and make them believe they have control over women. "They present the man like someone who doesn’t have to care or be chivalrous to a woman," (Muniz, 2016). One example is, Jiggy Drama’s “Contra La Pared” music video, the Colombian rapper poses as a law enforcement officer and demands all the women at a house party to stand against the wall. …show more content…

Jiggy Drama later makes gestures with a police baton as though he’s going to hurt one woman. Many people see this kind of videos harmless, this is worrying because Reggaeton is a genre mostly listened by young audience, and they are making this audience assume that what is heard is correct, and is not. The experience of listening to music can potentially shape an individual’s values, actions, and worldview (Levy & Byrd, 2011).
