The popularity of social networking sites (SNS) has grown very popular amongst adolescents, and a study by Ong et. al explored the relationship between social networking and the personality traits of narcissism and extraversion, both of which are believed to be the two key predictors of SNS usage.

Social Networking sites allow users to control their self-presentation on online platforms in a strategic manner, which is why it is expected that narcissists use this to their advantage and enhance their image (Walther, 2007, cited by Ong) as narcissistic individuals tend to be superficial, exhibitionistic, and they generally enjoy seeking attention. The other hypotheses focus on the remaining traits of the big five factors of personality: agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness to experience, and neuroticism. Similar to the Study by Ong et al., the study predicts positive relationships between self-presentational data and extraversion and narcissism. However, Lee et al. predict a negative correlation between narcissism and behaviour that appears on the News Feed such as likes and comments. Neuroticism was also anticipated to be positively linked with self-presentational data, but not news feed sharing. Openness to experience and agreeableness were both predicted to correlate positively with activity and information on the Facebook Walls and Newsfeeds, whereas conscientiousness was expected to be negatively associated with these …show more content…

For example, the additional aspect of status updates allowed the researchers to suggest that the positive relationship between status updates and narcissism was due to the need for narcissists to draw attention to themselves and broadcast their lives. They also find that the areas of SNS extroverts are more drawn to are the communicative ones, further deepening our understanding of the motives underpinning behaviour on SNS.
