The first half of the 1900s was a rollercoaster to say the least. Prior to and during the 20th century, an enormous growth in industry occurred, with huge companies working to mass produce an ever-increasing amount of goods on a previously unimaginable scale. This time of growth and prosperity, at least for some people, lead to what is now known as the roaring 20s. The twenties are embodied by the pop culture of the time, with swingers (that eras version of clubbers) going to recreational events in automobiles in the latest fashion. Technological and cultural advances were quickly transforming the United States from a collection of somewhat disconnected regions, to a highly interconnected modern nation.
The 1920’s in America is often considered as “The Roaring Twenties. World War I was over, women got suffrage, fashion changed immensely, prohibition was put into place, and jazz filled the air. The Roaring ‘20s was a decade of play and prosperity. Unemployment was low and Americans were better off financially. After World War I, America wanted to return to normal.

One of the most prominent social biases, both in the 1920’s specifically and throughout American history, is race. In the period after WWI, race tensions were heightening. While family structure has changed dramatically since the 1950’s, what current changes are we seeing; and how is it affecting the roles to which we play in a compromising world. In the 1950’s families consisted of a head of household (the Father), the house wife (or mother); and their offspring (the children). The father’s duty was to bring home the bacon, while making end meets for his family, while the wife stayed home and cared for the children, the elderly; and took on the household duties. These families usually lived in the suburbs, where they raised their children; while teaching them the proper ways of life. During this time in history, young women were expected to find a mate through persuasion, then get hitched; and eventually produce an offspring.
The Roaring Twenties were a time of change for all of America. It was a time of new morals and political change. America was becoming a more urban and wealthy nation. The twenties were a liberating time for most Americans, especially women. Life improved for women in the 1920s because they gained a new freedom in society and they were guaranteed the right to vote, even though they were still considered inferior to men in the workplace.
America experienced a sudden disregard of Victorian values following World War I, causing the generation of the 1920s to dramatically contrast the previous. This severe degree of change produced three major manifestations of the contradictions in the twenties. There were massive conflicts to the Jazz Age, technological advancements, and Black Migration. The contradictions of the 1920s reflect America’s conflicted state between advancement and convention, as the cultural and technological developments of the era coincide with the inability of individuals to stray from traditional norms and racist attitudes.
Throughout her essay Brady used sarcasm and outlandish claims to incite a strong emotional reaction from her readers. I too was shocked by her requirements for a wife and the fact that women in that time period were expected to follow these requirements.
