It is said that “The best relationships are the ones you don’t expect and the ones you never saw coming” (Pinterest, 2016). This quote shows that some relationships are unexpected and turn out to be the best ones a person can have. Relationships are essential for everybody, they teach how to be true to oneself, get out there, and not be afraid. To help prove the thesis, this first short story, “Tic and Shout” by Gail Giles, shows that embracing oneself can get one accepted by others. Alex, the main character, has a disease called Tourette’s syndrome. He feels like no one understands him and that he is a mystery to his classmates. In Alexandria, Virginia, T.C. Williams High School football team went from being all white players to now being racially diverse. Coach Herman Boone forces the players to sit next to and room with someone of a different race (Yakin 2000). As the players are getting on the buses to go to their football camp, they segregate themselves from each other. And Coach Boone makes them intermix. Boone is determined to get the players to come together and work and play as a team. With a successful season, the Titans win the state semifinals championship (Yakin 2000). Over the season with many conflicts, hardships, and discrimination, the players came together as a team and as a result they got much success in their season. With Coach Boone and Yoast’s determination, they made the Titans not only a great team but a family as well despite their different cultures and skin color. The T.C. Williams High School Titans had an undefeated season and won the state championships (Yakin 2000). The Titans won every game of their 1971 season. They went so far in their season that they made it to the state championships and they won them. While trying to fit in and express herself, Felicity is ignored even more than she was originally. She thinks, “To my surprise, the more I twirled, the more people ignored me” (Yee 206). Felicity is trying to fit in by being herself. She doesn’t have much success but she continues to stay herself and tries to make friends. After a few months, Felicity finally found her place on the island. Felicity explains about her new friends to the reader, “Danny and I would study together on our breaks and later on our days off” (Yee 215). She works at Auntie Alea’s, where she finally made friends. Felicity is fitting in as a fire twirler and the only reason is because she stayed true to herself and her baton. After living in Hawaii for a year and being successful at her job, Felicity preformed her final performance. Her co-worker came up to her and told Felicity, “Jimmy hugged me and said, ‘Kalani, your brother is our brother too’” (Yee 217). After she performed, Felicity’s co-workers came over to her mentally ill brother and put their leis around his neck. Felicity has come a long way and has made many friends at her job.
