Religion within the household
Despite Ali and Hassan being welcome, there is a clear class difference between the Pashtuns and Hazaras, the Sunnis and the Shias. Amir recalls that “By the time I dragged myself out of bed and lumbered into the bathroom, Hasan had already washed up, prayed the morning namaz with Ali, and prepared my breakfast” (Pg. 27). Instead of going to school and work, Ali and Hassan take care of the house and gardens. Hassan has little education and blindly follows his faith and religious teachings. Amir on the other hand has more opportunities for education. While in school, Amir learns more about his history, which allows him to be more questioning of his childhood religious teachings.

The Taliban claim to enforce Muslim laws, but are really taking them to the extreme and governing everything, even uncriminal related things.The Taliban are the true sinners because they are not following the teachings but rather twisting the meanings to benefit and support their rules.
Although he would not want to compare himself to the Taliban, Amir agrees that every sinner must be punished, specifically in regards to his own sin. When he tries to get Hassan to pelt him with pomegranates, he is expressing his feeling that in order to be forgiven for hurting Hassan, Hassan must hurt him. In order to atone for his sin, Amir must erase the lines of discrimination he has lived with all his life by giving Sohrab a chance at happiness.
When Amir is rescuing Sohrab, he notices that his eyes¨were slaughter sheep´s eyes. They even had the mascara….the mullah in our backyard used to apply mascara to the eyes of the eyes of the sheep and feed it a cube of sugar before slicing its throat.¨ (Pg. 285) This is symbolic because Amir is again referencing the slaughtering of a lamb. In the alley, Hassan was the lamb about to be slaughtered when Amir chose to do nothing. Now Amir is trying to save Sohrab from the same fate(being slaughtered).
