Scientific Knowledge versus Religious Knowledge
“Science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the torch which illuminates the world” (Pasteur). Throughout the years, there has been a constant war between science and religion. While some believe that scientific knowledge is the only true and valuable knowledge, other believe the knowledge religion gives us is more valuable. Although religious knowledge is valued by many, scientific knowledge is more powerful and credible. Scientific knowledge is supported by evidence, it has the ability to solve major problems, and is objective. When faced with a problem, scientific knowledge is used to examine the issue and find a solution for it. But when religious knowledge is put to test, no specific solutions are determines. When a body ages, a person doesn’t function as well and an individual starts facing various difficulties; one of them being the loss of hearing ability. According to knowledge provided through religious preaching, “Jesus…put[s] His fingers into [the man’s] ears…and looking up to heaven with a deep sigh, He said to Him…”Be Opened” And his ears were opened” (New American Standard Bible, Mark. 7:32-37). Religious knowledge claims that Jesus has the ability to cure deafness restoring the individual’s hearing abilities. This theory is not beneficial at all as it does not provide any definite solutions to the problem, other than to leave everything to God. However, through scientific knowledge, doctors are able to cure deafness through the process of “medicine or surgery, depending on the disease process” (Hearing Loss Association of America). Scientific knowledge does not change based on one’s religion; it applies to everyone equally. When a new cure is discovered, the cure is used for any individual regardless of their religion. This is beneficial to the society as it aids every one and is not subjected to discrimination. However, religious knowledge teaches people ethnocentrism, the belief that their values are the superior than others’. This has no benefit in the society, and it also creates rifts between people of different religions. A major conflict that still exists today is the religious rift between Islam and Christianity. Both religions believe that the only view that is correct is their religious view and both religions reject each other’s religious knowledge and views. The religious knowledge taught by both the religions promotes ethnocentrism that causes a rift between people, and does not benefit anyone in any
