When counseling breastfeeding mothers we must address is she having a adequate diet, are they receiving support from their spouse and family, any chronic health issues and how much milk are they producing. We need to inform the mother to keep to a balanced but adequate diet. Many mothers expect the weight just to all fall off after birth but it also depends on how you fed your body while you were pregnant. Breastfeeding mothers should consume a variety of food from the Food Guide Pyramid. She should consume six to eleven servings of bread or grain, two to four of fruit, three to five of vegetables, three servings of dairy on a daily basis as well as three servings of meat and etc. While breastfeeding your body requires more calories than your were pregnant, you should consume an additional 500 calories. So for the most part healthy lactating women should consume about 2,700 calories per day.

We have to address all issues what was your weight before pregnancy, did you have twins and are they any chronic health issues. Breastfeeding is also a great way to gradually lose weight. We must also address the intake of fluids, not too many sugary or caffeinated drinks. Breastfeeding mothers need to intake 8-10 cups of water a day possibly even more to ensure that they are producing enough milk for their baby.
