Introduction The good times, the bad times, we have experiences of them all. While some experiences are intrinsically more painful than others, often the difference between a joyful and a painful experience lies in the way we view and perceive what happened. The emotions perceived can impact individuals in a multitude of ways. Specifically, reminiscing on emotional events has been shown to increase happiness and subjective well-being (Bryant, King, & Smart, 2005). It has also been shown that reminiscing can reduce the negative effects of depression and increase positive perceptions that lead to personal growth (Moral, Terrero, Galan, & Rodriguez, 2015). It is also predicted that participants who are told to negatively reminisce will score lower on the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the State Self-Esteem Scale as compared to the participants who are in the neutral reminiscing group. Based on the crisis at different life stages, it is predicted that age will moderate the relationship between reminiscence and self-esteem such that the younger participants will show a greater increase in self-esteem when they positively reminisce, while the older participants will show a significantly smaller increase in their self-esteem levels. It is predicted that age will moderate the relationship between reminiscence and self-esteem such that the younger participants will show a greater decrease in self-esteem when they negatively reminisce, while the older participants will show a significantly smaller decrease in their self-esteem levels. Based on the difference in self-esteem between genders, it is predicted that gender will moderate the relationship between reminiscence and self-esteem such that the females will show a greater increase in their self-esteem when they positively reminisce, while the male participants will show a significantly smaller increase in their self-esteem levels.
