Firstly, I choose the Renaissance of music which occurred between 1450 and the 1600th. During this time period there were great developments in technology, art, and most importantly music. During this time period a printing mechanism was invented and music was able to reach places it couldn’t reach before. As a result, the music influenced a lot of people. Bringing forth new composers and musicians during this time period.
Additionally, “during this time period musical activity shifted from the church to the courts” (Music pg. 78). Consequently, many high profile figures of those times sought out the best composers. “Atypical choral piece has four, five, or six, voice parts nearly equal melodic interest” (Music Pg. 79). “Homophonic texture was also used with the successions of the chords, is also used especially in light music, like dances” (Music Pg. 79). Both textures were used accordingly within a piece of music to provide contrast and display different aspects of a piece as it develops. In addition, “Renaissance music sounds mild and relaxed, because stable, consonant chords are favored; triads occur often, while dissonance is played down” (Music Pg.79). Renaissance choral music was considered to be the golden age of unaccompanied music because, choral music did not need instrumental accompaniment. However, on rare occasion instruments and voices were combined to form the unique sound of the Renaissance. Composers from this era includes Josquin Desprez, a master of Renaissance music, Thomas Weelkes an organist and church composer, and John Dowland, a virtuoso performer on the lute who very well known throughout Europe. In fact, these are just a few of the composers that played an intricate role in the development of sacred music in the Renaissance. As a matter of fact, there are two main forms of sacred music motet and mass. Although, these two styles are alike, mass is the longer of the two.
