The book starts with a delinquent named Cole who likes to get into trouble with things like robberies, bullying and possibly drugs and alcohol. The first bit of the book starts off with Cole bragging about robbing a store and then a boy named Peter Driscal tattles on him and Cole gives him a mean glare and says, “ You’re dead!”. Later that day Cole finds Peter and brutally beats him while others watch and try to stop Cole. As part of his punishment he is told he has two options; number one being jail and number two being circle justice and a banishment to an island off the coast of Alaska. Cole choses the island and two men named Garvey and Edwin.
Abel Fields was convicted under the Stolen Valor Act for falsely claiming he had received the Purple Heart. Fields has never served in the military and therefore has never received a military award. At his first trial, Fields was found guilty for violating the Stolen Valor Act and was sentenced to a fine. Fields then appealed his sentence and the Court of Appeals overturned his conviction citing that Fields’ First Amendment rights were violated. The government then appealed the Court of Appeals’ decision and the case was sent to the Supreme Court.

This novel, at first, seems to be about the orphan train that ran from New York City to Arizona. However, the title is misleading, as it suggests to the reader that the novel is focusing on the orphans. Rather, Gordon uses the orphans as a lens through which one can view the inequalities between the people in Arizona.

They had a strong feeling about something they wanted to do, and they accomplished this by not giving up and pushing forward. The Nine students used perseverance, passion, and bravery to become the first black students to go to an all-white school in 1957.
