We may not know what is exactly right or what is exactly wrong, but we can work together to get an approximation of where the lines cross. We may struggle with it at times, but that is why we live on. To get closer to that line for our future sons and daughters so the struggle is less. Sappho was close to knowing this if she didn’t already know it. Sappho was a poet during the 640-610 B.C.(¨Sappho.¨) Her life and how she chose to live it was not only ahead of her time, forbidden, and pure genius; it was essential for her to stay true to herself. Sappho perfectly and accurately conveys Greece, through her beloved poetry, her undetermined yet passionate love, and her complex life. We still find ourselves having the same problems as she had. Sappho was born around 600 B.C. on the island of Lesbos. Her father’s name was Scamandronymus and her mother was called Cleis. Sappho had at least two brothers and may have been married and had a daughter but no one really knows because they didn’t have the resources we have today. Among her problems her poems caused her, she was also sent into exile by Pittacus who came to power. Fragment 98 discusses about her time after she was exiled and how she felt. The Parian Marble stated that Sappho was exiled, between 604 B.C. and 594 B.C., to Sicily (Biography Editors). Not much is known about that time except that she was released and then spent most of her time in Lesbos after that.
