As I walked into the cafeteria, I caught a whiff of the food being prepared in the cafeteria and thought to myself, “Why can’t we go off-campus to get lunch?” While SLA, the lunch program at Catholic High, provides the school lunches, there could be an alternative solution to this. Unfortunately, students are detained at school during lunch hours and are not able to leave campus during lunch forcing them to be served by SLA or bring their own lunch. If Catholic High School were to introduce an open-campus lunch, students and faculty would benefit greatly. While SLA does provide the lunch at CHS, they do not live up to their standard of “high quality, nutritious, and cost efficient”.
If I were to change one thing in my community, I would change the school lunches, because they taste horrendous, and they need to be healthier. First, the lunches should not be processed foods because those use a lot of chemicals that are harmful to the body. Some examples of processed foods are foods that come pre made or from a box or a can. Processed foods usually contain more con syrup and sugars, usually addicting and can make you gain weight, contains many artificial ingredients, high in carbohydrates, and uses lots of oils that are usually processed as well.
On a typical school day, students sit through 7-8 hours of nonsensical busywork before they can even leave the building. Most high schools in America have a strictly structured day planned out for their students. To begin the day, students sit in class for a few hours. Then they are exposed to some of the worst food known to man, cafeteria food. Not to mention that once they are done scarfing down the sodium-rich garbage called food, the students have to sit in class for a few more hours before their freedom is regained.
School Lunch menus need to be changed. Many schools plan on changing their lunch menus. When changing school lunches many students will lose some of their favorite foods. When the schools do finally decide to change the lunches, it needs to be a change for students, they need to be healthier and it needs to be something different for students.
(Pollan 197-198) Eating locally sustained food provides not only multiple health benefits to our bodies such as vitamins and minerals, but the animals are also eating what they were meant to which allows for a healthier cow, therefore a healthier meal we eat. Although most schools do try to offer healthier options, kids do not have to take them and would rather take the chip bag sitting next to the apple, for instance, “Schools must offer dairy, grains, fruits, and vegetables, but there are no programs to make sure that children are eating them.... Unhealthy foods usually lack the nutrients that children need to stay energized and focus throughout the rest of the day.
What would you do for lunch and how would you explain it to your parents after school? Students have been known to not eat lunch at school very often because, for the main reason, they don’t like it. Others say that they “aren’t hungry”, but you never know. Schools should just make the lunch more healthy and taste better. Even though school lunches could potentially make students sick and not feel good, some students say it is disgusting and causes them not to eat and complain because they’re not getting
Studies show that overweight students tend to have more problems with learning and paying attention (Miura). Many parents also fear that children would have the chance to skip school of get into drugs and alcohol while they are loose for their lunch break. People of the communities have also expressed their fears of increased traffic and increased risk of traffic collisions (?9 Primary Pros and Cons of Open Campus Lunch?). Not only can open lunches cause health problems, but they can lead to other dangers such as a car crash or
Eating a healthy school lunch is part of the National School Lunch Program. It increases a child's consumption of six vitamins and minerals. According to a study published in 2003 in the “American Journal of Agricultural Economics.” Researchers found that eating school lunches helped a student’s intake of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, vitamin B12 and riboflavin, as well as dietary fiber. These students also had a lower intake of added sugars.
Every day students enjoy their lunches at school. They always enjoy eating their delicious meals where they have the option to chose what they want. If their lunch is changed then their options will be limited. Changing the lunch to be healthier will not be something that will be very great for our school. If the school lunch is changed then some of the students that are larger could not get the nutrition they need and hurt the ones that really need those extra calories.
It is not difficult to find rotten fruits lurking among a tray of apples and oranges. Due to their appearance, healthy options such as fruit are often discarded. It is the duty of the National School Lunch Program to provide food for students, yet the quality and taste of school lunches requires drastic
The school lunches impacting more than just the schools money, it’s impacting the students education and after school activities just like sports teams. This being, there would be more room in the cafeteria and we could fit most, if not all the students into one lunch period. This would shorten the school day by about an hour, yet all of the classes for the day have been complete. Open lunch would make the lunch hour longer, and would be a pro for the students. It would give them a chance to finish homework
On my observation day the menu for school lunch was, mashed potatoes and gravy, sticky chicken fingers, whole wheat roll, broccoli, and a cup of mixed fruit. As I watched the kids through the line the majority of the students did not take the broccoli. I watched a class of 30 students go through, out of those 30 students, 3 of them accepted the offer of broccoli. Classes after that had about the same ratio as the first one. After the kids sat down and started eating, only a handful of those who took the broccoli actually ate it.
