Is the Internet making us dumber, is a question that is being asked quite offend, especially during this modern age of technology. Where we are all connected to the internet, for better or for worse, as we can communicate with people across the world, people also use it to harass people. The internet also allows us to gather and gain information faster than ever before, but yet is it making us lose the ability to do simple tasks? According to Benjamin Storm, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of California at Santa Cruz, “Offloading robs you of the opportunity to develop the long-term knowledge structures that help you make creative connections, have novel insights and deepen your knowledge.” Additionally in the article, “Married to Google” it states that, “An experiment conducted by Harvard undergrads, Subjects were instructed to hype 40-trivia-like statements into a dialog box. Half were told that the computer would erase the information and half that it would save, afterward when asked to recall the statements, the students who were told their typing would be erased remembered much more, lacking a computer backup, they apparently committed more to memory.” This makes sense as people put more trust into technology, more people tend to not remember information for the long term, slowly making our memories weaker and worse. However, it could be argued that we do not need to memorize as many stuff, as now we could quickly look and gain information when needed. Even though the internet is making memorization obsolete as we could just google the information we need, it also gives us more free time to improve and innovate as long as giving us more time to relax as we spend less time trying to remember or recall information. The internet also gives people equal and easy access to education and information, letting those who are not able to attend classes in person a chance to gain an equal footing with everyone else. Even if the internet is slowly worsening our memory, it can be debated that we need to memorize as much information as we used to. Overall no matter your stance on the internet you can not deny its effects on humanity as a whole, as it changed the way we live and learn, but at the end of the day, humanity will always be growing and
