Aaliyah’s Legacy Lives On Although the music industry has lost many amazing artist, one artist that still lives on today is Aaliyah Dana Haughton. Aaliyah was a young girl who’s dream started when she was just child. Aaliyah grew up to be one of the most talented R&B singers of her time, appeared in movies, was a model, dancer, and created a new fashion trend. I chose Aaliyah because I loved how she portrayed herself from her music styling, to her fashion trends and, she made an amazing impact on millions. Aaliyah was born in Brooklyn, Kings County New York and moved to Detroit, Michigan when she was five years old. She worked hard to get where she wanted to be and at it paid off. At the young age of 15, she released her first album “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number.” She continued making her wonderful music along with guest starring in movies. All the success Aaliyah was accomplishing was just the beginning for her. In 2001, Aaliyah was working on what was her last album. Aaliyah and crew flew to the Bahamas to film the music video for her song, “Rock the Boat.” On August 25, 2001 Aaliyah and crew boarded on a place to head back home. Unfortunately, the plane crashed after being 200 feet in the air and killed Aaliyah and her eight crew members. At an early age, Aaliyah’s parents noticed their daughters singing talent. They were always supportive of her and encouraged to do whatever made her happy. As a child, Aaliyah’s parents enrolled her in voice lessons, and this would only be the beginning for Aaliyah’s singing career. When Aaliyah was in first grade, she played Annie in the play “Annie.” After performing in this play Aaliyah decided, at such a young age, what she wanted to become: “I’ve always been a very mature person and I’ve always known what I wanted” (Aaliyah Biography). She knew she wanted to become part of the entertainment industry and she pursued this dream with no hesitation. Given the amazing talent that she had, there was no doubt that she would be able to accomplish what she wanted. When Aaliyah talked about what she wanted to do, she had amazing support from her parents: “When I told my parents that I wanted to embark along this path, they were with me all the way” (Aaliyah Biography). With the support of her family, Aaliyah decided that she would audition for television shows and commercials, one of those shows being Star Search. Aaliyah did not stop here, when she was 11, Aaliyah began to sing alongside her aunt Gladys Knight, whom was married to her uncle Barry Hankerson.
