Alicia Cook was born on January 25, 1981 in Harlem, New York, and was raised by her mother. She enrolled in piano lessons when she was 7 years old. Four years later Alicia started writing her own songs. Her music was a combination of contemporary and R&B. She got an education at a Professional Performance Arts School, Columbia University. This helped her develop her vocal skills. She then graduated at the age of 16 and was valedictorian of her class. She began working with Columbia records and ever since then she has had continuous success with her career (Alicia Keys). Alicia keys had many musical influences. Some of those people include, Nina Simone, Barbara Streisand,Marvin Gaye, and Willa Cather (Fiore Raymond). Alicia has been nominated for many awards. She has won 15 grammys. She has also had several number 1 hits. Her first song that reached number 1 was “Fallin”, in 2001, which was the song that made her famous (Alicia Keys). A few of the categories Alicia has won awards in were best R&B album, best rap song, and best vocal performance. When her debut album Songs In A Minor, that was released in 2001, went platinum five times. Critics praised the album for lyric maturity and it's musical polish. 2 years later her second album The Diary of Alicia Keys, in 2003, went to No. 1. In 2009 Keys was named best R&B artist of the decade. Alicia Keys tied with Britney Spears, having the most consecutive No. 1 debuts by a female singer.
