Alicia Cook was born on January 25, 1981 in Harlem, New York, and was raised by her mother. She enrolled in piano lessons when she was 7 years old. Four years later Alicia started writing her own songs. Her music was a combination of contemporary and R&B. She got an education at a Professional Performance Arts School, Columbia University. This helped her develop her vocal skills. She then graduated at the age of 16 and was valedictorian of her class.
