The Controversial Murder
Christa Worthington was a fashion writer for many popular magazines, such as Elle, Cosmopolitan, and the New York Times. She and her two and a half year old daughter Ava, lived in Truro, Massachusetts and led a humble life. On January 6th of 2002, Tim Arnold, one of her ex-boyfriends, discovered Christa's forty-six year old body in her home twenty four to thirty six hours after the crime had been committed. Investigators found Ava's bloody hand prints all over the house and on her sippy cup that she had tried to feed her mother. Many of the suspects were people who had been close to Christa, including ex-boyfriends and her father, but only until April 14th of 2005, did the police arrest someone. At first, McCowen refused to give another sample of his DNA and denied having intimate relationships with Christa, but finally in spring of 2004 he agreed to give his DNA. He was apprehensive about providing his DNA because he said that Christa had told him that"[he] could never tell anyone we had sex because her family would never accept the fact of her dating or having anything to do with black people."(3) The DNA sample verified that he and Christa had sexual intercourse. District Attorney Michael O'Keefe had blamed the prolonged match due to the number of cases and limited resources at the State Police crime lab (13). Years after he had been sentenced, Sandra Lee, who is a reporter for Cape Cod Today, conducted an interview. McCowen admitted to having sexual intercourse with Christa at the time, yet on only one occasion. McCowen claimed that Worthington had come onto him, "[Christa] started flirting with me and stuff… [Christa] lifted the long dress shirt she was wearing and she climbed on top of me" (3). McCowen had also claimed that his wife had seen him the night Christa was murdered, yet she would not testify to this (3). There was no physical evidence that linked McCowen to the murder of Christa
