The wetland animal known as the beaver is a mostly nocturnal subaquatic rodent. They are the largest living rodent in North America. Beavers are best known for their ability to swim and build their homes in dams. Beavers use their strong incisor teeth to strip bark and and break down small trees to build up their dams. Beavers can live in colonies of up to six or more. The beaver population was once more than 60 million but as of 1988 it has declined to 6-12 million as a result of extensive hunting and trapping. (Moore). The beaver's diet consists of tree bark and the soft tissue that grows under the bark.
