Daphnia Magna are small crustaceans that are excellent for observing the effect of depressants on their nervous system. The purpose of this specific experiment is to observe the effect of ethanol, aspirin, and caffeine on daphnia’s heart rate. Not only do these chemicals affect heart rate, but they also affect the frequency of reproduction, number of eggs produced, and body structure. Pesticides similar to these chemicals can be released into the environment and daphnia re useful in monitoring toxicity levels. The agents being tested in this experiment can be administered to determine the effects of hormones, stimulants, antidepressants, and neurotransmitters.
They create a well balanced ecosystem by being the prey of amphibians and small water insects and eating algae found in ponds and lakes. When there is not Daphnia present in lakes and ponds, an increase of algae and decrease of fish can be seen. Daphnia magna is a transparent water flea species found in rocky pools along the Atlantic Ocean. The Daphnia’s body is encased in a clear structure called carapace (Elenbaas, 2013). The exoskeleton, carapace, provides protection for the Daphnia magna, “The portion of the hard exoskeleton, or shell, that covers all or part of the body of many crustaceans…” (“Definition, n.d.). The heart can be easily seen under a light microscope due to the transparency of the skin (Handy, 2012).

The experiment discussed in this lab report was performed on daphnia, exploiting their transparency which renders them the ideal organism, to test effects of various stimulus on cardiac activity. Past research studies have found ethanol to produce a depressant effect, one similar to the depressant effects of melatonin, and GABA. In contrast, Corotto (2010) has experimented on stimulants, e.g. nicotine, and found an approximate 20% increase in HR.

This said philosophy shapes us and molds us as a person, and makes us better, or worse, and that philosophy is the ‘supposed’ philosophy we view life through, and always will. The thing is though, we all as a society have many philosophies that shape the life in which we live. Those philosophies shape us and make us who we are, they work together, and cooperate so we can understand the world better. Everybody has conflicting thoughts and ideas, and that’s because we have more than one philosophy in our life and they all exist in one person.
