Brody Davis Joanne Coogan English Composition February 22, 2018 Divergent Divergent is a well-constructed piece of literature. The novel is the first of the Divergent trilogy, a series of young adult dystopian novels set in the Divergent Universe. Divergent is set in a post- apocalyptic Chicago. Citizens are defined by their social and personality-related affiliation with five factions, which removes the threat of anyone exercising independent will and re-threatening the population's safety. Abnegation are the selfless personality types. Erudite are the intelligent of the divergent universe. Amity are the kind, Dauntless are the brave, and Candor are the Honest. Instead of having the five social groups working together, towards a common good, they are separated. This separation deprives the opportunity to free will and independence. Each group separation causes the other group to be lacking in a particular department. Instead of the brave and intelligent working together, they work for themselves. Much like in actual society, the smart and brave is often divided. Intelligent people surround themselves with other genius people. The brave surround themselves with other brave people as if to cut hesitation out of the equation. The five groups in divergent are social divisons but all are traits necessary and beneficial when together. The selfless should work with the kind, and both work with the others. Divergent illustrates authority dividing these groups. The division makes it easier to control the population and what they do in daily life. Much like how Britain intended to control pre -liberated United States. Keep a division, and you control the outcome. When that division
