In the article this week, it addressed the pros and cons of what they are classifying as driverless cars. “They’d allow mobility for disabled and elderly people who are currently limited by their inability to drive.” This statement is one of many pros to having something that we don’t have to really control. I also think it’s the only pro that I can think of besides the fact that it would reduce the chances of head on collisions and human error accidents.
The companies today that are attempting to make self driving cars have had a huge success and this is a good thing because they have found that if the road is occupied only by self driving cars then it would be safer in a number of ways. One reason stated in the article “ The 3 biggest ways self- driving cars will improve our lives,” by Cadie Thompson, is that “ if 90% of cars were autonomous, the number of accidents would fall from 6 million a year to 1.3 million a year.” This would be a drastic change, and would help save hundreds of thousands of lives each year. Believe it or not, we make use of cultural artifacts much more than one would think. For example, one source listed all the transportation services that can be replaced and greatly affected by driverless cars (Lessmand and Lewis 1). But it’s still not a good reason on why you shouldn 't use driverless cars. Driverless cars do more than replace they save. They save lots of lives and prevent many traffic fatalities.
First of all, let’s talk about the environment. I’m sure you all know about greenhouse gases and global warming, so I won’t talk much about that, but you may not know that road vehicles produce 10% of all man-made greenhouse gas emissions. This does include vehicles other than cars like trucks, but Tesla just came out with an electric truck which is faster and can carry more weight than any petrol/diesel truck. Greenhouses gases carbon-dioxide and methane have hit their highest levels in the past 420,000 years, and the extent of arctic sea ice has declined about 10% in the last 30 years. This is all because of global warming, and if we start switching to electric cars, we could make a big difference and maybe, just maybe the effects of global warming will decrease.
