Mt. Everest is the highest standing mountain in the world at 29,035 feet above sea level. It is located in Asia, in the Himalayan Mountains in Nepal. The name Everest came from a British surveyor in 1856, his name was George Everest. Reaching the summit of Everest is by far the most challenging summit to reach out of any mountain in the world. The main thing that makes Everest so difficult to climb is that it is so high. At such a high altitude above sea level makes climbing so much harder as you face low levels of oxygen and risk of altitude sickness. Mt. Everest has never been completely conquered until May 29, 1953, at 11:30 A.M. Two men by the names of Edmund Hillary, and Tenzing Norgay. For this expedition, Only the best and most experienced climbers were chosen in the British Empire. Edmund Hillary from New Zealand, and Tenzing Norgay from Indian. Though Tenzing Norgay was recruited in India, he was born a Sherpa. A Sherpa is someone who is a member of the Himalayan people who lived on the border of Nepal and Tibet. Sherpas are very well known for their skills and knowledge of mountain climbing. It would make sense for Tenzing to be recruited as he has great knowledge of the Himalayan Mountains and climbing. Edmund Hillary, or Sir Edmund Hillary, was a New Zealand explorer who was born in Auckland, New Zealand. Edmund Hillary also was an Antarctic explorer. He explored many parts and reached the South Pole. Edmund Hillary also did do other climbing expeditions. For example, he was among the first people to climb to the top of Mount Herschel, which stands at 10,941
