Ernest Hemingway was an American novelist and journalist during the early nineteen hundreds. After the great war, he quickly became part of a group of writers called the lost generation. However, he also wrote brilliant short stories which should be considered a form of art. The dictionary definition of a short story is “a story with a fully developed theme but significantly shorter and less elaborate than a novel” (dictionary). A short story should be grander and more perfect than a novel; primarily it should be a masterpiece. The vocabulary, precision, language, rhythm, and structure have to flow and fill every part that a novel would, but it should be shorter in length. When Nick was previously injured, he felt his soul leave his body which left him emotionally traumatized. He predicts that his soul will permanently leave his body if he allows it. This beautifully written quote would summarize the most significant theme of the short story which is death. In an attempt to fall asleep the main character would remember all the stress where he has caught trout. In one of Nick’s ways to fall asleep, he thinks about fishing and uses a salamander for bait. The salamander is a metaphor for Nick Adams. “Once I used a salamander from under an old log. The salamander was very small and neat and agile and a lovely color. He had tiny feet that tried to hold on to the hook, and after that one time I never used a salamander, although I found them very often” (Hemingway 277).

Steve is also described multiple times as white, which shows that race is essential to Hemingway. This short story resolves that the person that one portrays to be is not always who you are. The other issue that the author is trying to work through are the standards of what defined a man? Hemingway also objectifies women by not giving peroxide a name. In a way, Steve was more honorable than Tommy or Nick because he was more honest because he could view people for who they are and not just their physical characteristics. Ernest Hemingway’s short stories exhibit a simple, but powerful writing style. This allows the author to have a clear message for the readers to discern. One could say that Hemingway is a master of dialogue and understatement. It was clear that every adjective that Hemingway used to describe each character was chosen carefully. Although the majority of his short stories were fictional, there was no fluff. Hemingway communicated everything exactly how he wanted to and not did “sugar-coat” any of the characters. They were raw and bold and had no fear of judgment. This new style of writing influenced other writers after him and reformed the short story
