Ernest Hemingway was a literary legend in his time, and reflects himself in his characters, which says a lot about him. In Indian Camp, a doctor helps an indian woman give birth, in The Doctor and The Doctor’s Wife, that same doctor is mad because his workers are “stealing wood”. Throughout the short stories “Indian Camp” and “The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife”, Nick Adams turns into a racist and sexist person while simultaneously becoming an adult. His mother dressed him up like a girl during his childhood, which caused him to try to be the manliest man he could be in his adult life. Hemingway was the son of a physician and a music teacher who were devout congregationalists. He volunteered as a red cross ambulance driver in war, which meant he traveled a lot. “His mother encouraged Hemingway's marked impulse toward creativity, and his father provided an early grounding in nature lore and woodsmanship.” Even though he led a not so ideal childhood, he made up for it with a crazy and adventurous adult life. …show more content…
Nick is young and clueless and wants to know what is happening in the world “Listen to me, what she is going through is called being in labor. The baby wants to be born and she wants it to be born. All of her muscles are trying to get the baby born. That is what is happening when she screams”(p. 92 Indian Camp). also in the doctor story “I want to go with you”(doctor and doctor’s wife). He is afraid of the terrible truths the world holds with coming of age. nick started off innocent as can be, and ended knowing more than he wished to
