Industrial life increased employment for both the wealthy rich people and the poor people. Factory production played a major role in industrialization; the economy was rough during this period of time for working class people, life for the poor was harsh and incomes were low. Therefore, many people created their own clothing, furniture and tools. The factory production provided employment for many women and children as well. In the text it says, “…mill owners began referring to the workers as “poor children,” that description of people.”
The industry owners got children to work for them because the owners didn’t have to pay them as much money like how they have to pay adult workers a lot more money compared to the children. Weren’t able to go to school like we can today because they had to go to work everyday instead of learning. The child labor problem decreased from the 18.1 in the 1890s to 11.3 in the 1920s. In 1938 congress passed a law called Fair Labor Standards to get rid of child labor in our country. During the Progressive movement our state legislatures were corrupt and only had the rich being able to be chosen to be our state senators not the People.
Many people began to live in urban cities and worked all day to make a living. With these changes came new standards and many reforms. The Industrial Revolution was a horrific time in the 1700s by the fact that it caused bad pollution and children would be worn out at the end of their work day. The greatest aspect of industrialization was that the kids and adults had good surroundings. “Of these there are 500 children who are entirely fed, clothed, and educated by Mr.Dale” (Document 6). The quote is evidence that shows the kids were well cared for.
From 1865 to 1900, the rise of Industrial America occurred. In this time period, the railroad system was developed, new job opportunities sprung up left and right, and the American dream changed. Although the American society’s economy and standard of living seemed to prosper, it also allowed laborers’ lives to crumble,strikes occurred, children were left uneducated and forced to work in order to help support their families, and forced those families to get accustomed to squalid living conditions and hazardous working environments. The social classes developed.
Not only the meat packing industry, the overall factory environment in the early 1900s was depressing. Child labor was common. As Jame Adams observed in 1909, “thousands of the city youth will enter factory life at an early age as early as the state law will permit” (Doc. C). Implying her dissatisfaction toward the state action, she had pointed out one national issue for people to consider―child labor.
Imagine you were a factory worker, waking up at 4am to get ready for a 17+ hour day. The working environment was unsafe and the only concern of those running the factory was the productivity of the facility. There was absolutely no concern for the wellbeing of the workers. Hard work was rewarded each week with very low pay, which only allowed an individual to afford a small, crowded home with little furnishings. This was the typical life of a factory worker during the Industrial Revolution.
Child Labor Imagine you wake up and you have to walk all the way to work a couple of miles to work, then you have to work eleven to twelve hours a day, six days a week, and every day you have an easy risk of dying or getting your fingers chopped off. That is what children had to do from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Children were put through many hard jobs, such as using dangerous machinery. Children had to go through extremely hard labor. They worked long hard hours, six days a week.
The Industrial Revolution brought about significant changes to the workplace. In Document 1, Thomas Bernhard describes the working conditions of children employed in Mr. Dale's cotton mills. While children in other factories faced harsh working conditions, Mr. Dale's factory had special regulations to protect the health and morals of those under his protection. Out of nearly 3,000 children employed in the mills from 1785 to 1797, only fourteen have died, and not one has been the object of judicial punishment.
Did you know that children were forced to work in factories? Child labor is very cruel to children. Instead of enjoying their lives, they were forced to work in factories. Since children were having to act like adults, people worked to change this. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, kids were forced to work long hours, but many people worked to reform it.
One of the negative factors regarding the Industrial Revolution in our society is child labor. Children were taken out of there homes to work in factories and farms.
Child labor during the 18th and 19th century did not only rapidly develop an industrial revolution, but it also created a situation of difficulty and abuse by depriving children of edjucation, good physical health, and the proper emotional wellness and stability. In the late 1700 's and early 1800 's, power-driven machines replaced hand labor for making most manufactured items. Many of America 's factories needed a numerous amount of workers for a cheap salary. Because of this, the amount of child laborers have been growing rapidly over the early 1800s.
The life in the 19th-century for labor worker was from far easy. With all the wealth being generateing during the Gilded age very little of its wealth were given to the wokers. Even the best wages for a industrial worker were low, with long hours, working in awfully poor conditions. With safety rules and regulations being unexisted, it was hard to blame employers responsible. It was worse for women and children, who worked as hard or even harder than men, often time only revcieved only but a fraction of what a man earned.
During the “Cottage Industry”, children often worked on their parent’s farm or in a family business. However, once all factories were built in, children were encouraged to join the workforce in the cities. The unfortunate truth was that children were a lot easier to take advantage of. In other words, they would be mistreated, paid a lot less, and work in unsafe environments.
Child labor was a great concern in the Industrial revolution but very few people did something to stop it. Women and Children were forced to work more than 10 hours a day with only forty minutes to have lunch. Elizabeth Bentley once said that they didn’t have any time to have breakfast or drink anything during the day. They worked standing up and if they didn’t do their work on time they were strapped (whipped). Children were treating like they were not important, like they didn’t deserve a better life.
