William Butler Yeats is considered to be one of the greatest English-language poets of the twentieth century. In fact, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize astonishingly seven times in his lifetime, although he only actually won the award once in 1923.
Keats doesn’t waste a moment when it comes to introducing his fear to the reader. His first line opens with a deliberate contemplation of death. It immediately throws the reader into a place of vulnerability by playing on their fears. This opens the reader to the poem on a personal level, allowing them to connect to Keats’ views on dying.

There are several interpretations of John Keats’ poem, Ode to a Nightingale. Keats begins his poem with talking about a bird that seems real, but as the poem progresses the bird turns into a symbol. Keats was envisioning how life could be much simpler and he was thinking about the different ways life is troublesome. His reality was taken over by his dream of having a life like the nightingale- worryless and free. He wishes that he could join the bird because if he could escape to the nightingale’s world, he could escape from reality and live a much more uncomplicated and worry free life.
How is death presented in the six poems ? The theme of death is apparent in all of the poems. Some are natural deaths, other deaths of planned or caused. The natural deaths are unavoidable whereas the other deaths are intentional.

According to the official Nobel Prize website, Yeats was selected for his always inspiring poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation. The publications of ‘Last Poems’ and ‘Two Plays’, after his death, cemented his legacy as a leading poet and playwright. He died in 1939 and is remembered as one of the most significant modern poets of all times.
