Sonnet Comparison and Contrast: “When I Have Fears” and “Mezzo Cammin” In the sonnet, "When I Have Fears" by John Keats, the opening line "When I have fears that I may cease to be," represents the contemplation both Keats and Longfellow are undertaking as they reflect on their life. While Keats recognizes that he may not accomplish everything he wants to in this life, he is hopeful for the future and all it may hold. On the other hand, Longfellow reflects more on his life, which he views as uneventful and lacking meaning, and instead of looking toward the future, he swamps himself in dreading the inaction of his past. Through the use of diction, imagery, and tone, Keats and Longfellow illustrate the fleeting nature of life.

Nathaniel lived a fulfilling life, writing many books and reading many more. Hawthorne was given life on July 4, 1804. “Born in Salem, Massachusetts, the son of Nathaniel Hathorne and Elizabeth Clarke (Manning) Hathorne. Both his father and his mother came from a line of lean-jawed Puritans” (Kunitz 347) Hawthorne’s father was the captain of a ship, who set sail on a voyage in 1808.

This period was full of battles, wars, and fights to try and settle disagreements and live toward a better tomorrow. All the battles turned into a nightmare, and began to make it hard to survive. The living conditions were awful; sicknesses with no cure, killings with no empathy, large groups of people with nowhere to go, necessities but living in poverty, and so many other challenges. With most children from as little as the age of five were working and trying to help in any way possible; from working underground in the coal mines to cleaning chimneys.
John Keats was one of the youngest poets of the blossoming Romantic generation, and left a significant mark in literature. He was a romantic poet, his writing full of aspiration and lust, but as a person was shy and composed. He was a determined young man with all the teenage angst, on a pursuit to be considered among some of the greatest English poets as the legacy he would leave behind. Although he lived a shortened life, this did not stop him from writing some extremely important poems. When he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, Keats began to observe the beauty that was hidden in everything around him and this seeped into his writing, becoming a major component of the themes for his works.
Poems are used to express feelings towards another person, towards nature, towards themselves. John Keats a British poet who wrote to romance, he was one of the main figures of the second generation of Romantic poets. Keats aimed to accentuate extreme emotion through the emphasis of natural imagery. John Keats was born on October 31, 1795. He was the oldest of five siblings.
There are several interpretations of John Keats’ poem, Ode to a Nightingale. Keats begins his poem with talking about a bird that seems real, but as the poem progresses the bird turns into a symbol. Keats was envisioning how life could be much simpler and he was thinking about the different ways life is troublesome. His reality was taken over by his dream of having a life like the nightingale- worryless and free. He wishes that he could join the bird because if he could escape to the nightingale’s world, he could escape from reality and live a much more uncomplicated and worry free life.
Yeats was an impressionist, he used symbols. He also wrote preface to Geetanjali. He was also the spokesperson to the ‘Irish Revolution’ and started the National Irish Literary Movement. He started the Irish dramatics society in 1902 and founded Abbey Theatre in 1904. On one hand he is political in nature and on other hand he was the lost Romantic.
