Introduction
Theodore Robert Bundy, known as Ted Bundy, was a serial killed and rapist born on November 24, 1946. He was executed on January 24, 1989, in Starke Florida. It is unclear whether he began to kill his victims in 1974 or if it started earlier. A few of his victims survived their attacks and have spoken about what happened to them while a few are still listed as “missing person” cases that are still cold. All his victims were women with the youngest being 12 years old. The purpose of this research is to understand why Ted Bundy was executed at the time he was since not all the victims’ bodies had been found and he hadn’t confessed to all the murders. I also had prior knowledge to the subject from watching documentaries and listening to podcasts throughout the years. With Ted Bundy being a well-known serial killer in America there is a lot of information available now compared to other years. Using basic terms at first just looking up “Ted Bundy” to gain background knowledge on his childhood and early adult life gave a good start. Next, I used “Ted Bundy victims” that way I could learn approximately how many victims there were along with how they died or went missing. The last search I made was “Ted Bundy execution AND why”. Bundy escaped prison for the first time on June 7, 1977, after jumping from one of the courtroom windows. Bundy defended himself in trial and was allowed into the courthouse library during pretrial. He felt that from his time in law school he would be able to represent himself without a lawyer. While guards weren’t looking, he wasn’t in handcuffs, he was able to escape. He was only able to be out for six days where he got sent to trial for five new charges he escaped from custody again December 30, 1977. On January 15, 1978, Bundy was in Tallahassee, Florida where he broke into Chi Omega at the University of Florida and strangled two women to death and beat two other women. In June 1979 Bundy went to trial for the Chi Omega incident and was sentenced to death. He went to trial again for other murders in February 1980 and was given the death penalty again.
