As the weather gets colder and the leaves change colors, excitement begins because it means that Thanksgiving is coming. Just the word itself can evoke salivation and the idea of being able to smell the aroma of a turkey cooking in the oven or a warm, crisp apple pie ready to be served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Thanksgiving is a holiday where families come together all over the country and eat as much food as they possibly can before passing out on the couch while watching football. It is a season of happiness, warmth, and most of all, baking. From the stuffing and casseroles to the pies and other desserts, Thanksgiving is stuffed full of good food. At my Great Aunt’s house, the turkey goes into the oven very early so that it has enough time to cook. Then, dishes that don’t need any cooking time, such as a salad, are prepared. As the turkey continues to cook at one house, casseroles are put into the oven in other homes. Having access to only one oven on Thanksgiving Day can be very stressful. If you are able to use more than one oven, do it. A few casseroles that I see at my family’s Thanksgiving meal are green bean casserole and sweet potato casserole. These provide a mixture of savory and sweet tastes into the meal. Having a variety of food and flavors can make the meal more interesting. The dinner rolls are then put into the oven and after the casseroles and rolls are finished baking, desserts are next. My family usually bakes three or four different kinds of pies, so that everyone will at least like one kinds. Apple, pecan, and pumpkin pies are usually present.
