When the body of a well-known, widely-liked, man is found, Sherlock Holmes is the first on the case. With his assistant Watson narrating, the reader is in a position in which being in the mind of the genius is not the case. Through Watson’s point of view, Doyle uses red herrings to disrupt reader’s theories and threads as to who murdered Sir Charles Baskerville. The most repetitive red herring is found in the title of the book, the ferocious, menacing hound.

Conan Doyle created a character with many capabilities and a sense of mystery, sherlock holmes was an intelligent character, while Watson was more than the opposite. Throughout the Hound of the Baskervilles novella, there are many different ways in which Conan Doyle created Holmes and Watson's characters, differently along with a little bit of similarity. However there was one strong trait that Doyle devised upon Holmes, that being intelligence, along with a mind for mystery. There are many prime examples of this throughout the Novella, along with examples of holmes selfishness, knowing that he is the “best” detective in the world and that everyone else including Watson is just oblivious.
In the story Hound of the Baskervilles, Sherlock Holmes and his trusty companion are faced with another mystery that they are to solve. At the beginning of the book a man called Dr. Mortimer heads towards Sherlock’s office where he informs him of Sir Charles, a man who mysteriously died. Mortimer tells of a family curse in which a black hound haunts the Baskervilles family. The plot thickens as Henry, who is Charles only heir receives a letter informing him to avoid the family mansion and has 2 boots stolen from him. Watson is sent to investigate for Sherlock and continues to send reports to him who is supposedly in London.

The author of the Squire’s Tales that are also set in the Arthurian legends universe, Morris writes the Knight’s Tales series in the same setting. However, these novels are meant for younger readers than his previous series as they have the right combination of plumb good writing, authenticity as well as being smart and funny. The series of novels are generally geared towards the preteen readers who may have developed the thirst for the Arthurian novels after having seen them in other media. The Baskerville family is a wealthy family who owns a mansion on a moor. However they have been haunted by a hound who has been killing their family for years. Sir Charles has control of the family’s mansion and money, but that all changed when he was murdered by the hound. There was said to be prints of a hound near the body, proof of the hound’s existence. Sherlock Holmes and his assistant, Dr. Watson have the responsibility of taking care of the last member of the Baskerville family, and investigating the legend of the hound.
Suspicion can be fascinating but haunting. Since Victorian times, the suspicious death case of Sir Charles Baskerville in The Hound of the Baskerville has intrigued/compelled vast amounts of readers. However, recent audiences are more compelled to stories with a modern twist of horror and gruesomeness. Because of less main characters, a fast-paced plot, and the differing point of view of Atwood’s The Hound of the Baskervilles film adaptation, the film has a frightening, intriguing mood with a new perspective compared to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original novel.
A crime that reaches Sherlock Holmes is not just a broken law, but a mystery. Trivia locates patterns to form functional solutions, while Doyle creates a world of disguises, drugs, and intrigue, in which the answer is never the obvious or expected. The facts presented are not the definite, or even likely, conclusion. This is apparent in the story’s mystery, in which the wife of Neville St. Clair witnessed what appeared to be her husband’s murder, leading to the arrest of a beggar, Hugh Boone, who was found at the scene of the crime. However, Sherlock Holmes deduces that Boone and St. Clair are the same man, revealing that St. Clair had been commuting to the city to beg rather than work and had allowed his own arrest to protect his ruse.

By following this rubric, Christie also challenges the readers deductive and problem-solving powers with her enchanting stories about crime and murder. However, Christie was not the only mystery author to write during the Golden Age, as Doyle also wrote in this era. Doyle’s stories were featured in the early stages of the Golden Age, however they still followed the general guidelines seen in Christie and other mystery writers’ works. Doyle’s, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, is a prime example of the rubric being followed, as the story follows the enigmatic detective through all of his adventures and many of the cases seen throughout novel have this “distinctive style and […] flair for deducing clues”
These mystery stories are apart from the reality. The Realists, unlike the Intuitionists, presents the text as realistic as possible, Dorothy L. Sayers, an English author is one of the most famous writers of this sub-genre and wrote ‘Lord Peter Wimsey’ and another eleven novels and two sets of the short stories. The Realist works with the physical evidence such as footprints, bullet holes, and other forensic or measurable evidence, however, the Intuitionists with the exercise of minds. Therefore, Crime Fiction is not static, each of these sub-genres within The Golden Age holds its basic conventions of the establishment.
. Christie’s detective world is very much a product of the post World War I ‘modernist’ cynicism which also rendered in humans, a sense of introspection. As Poirot says, “It is the brain, the little grey cells on which one must rely. One must seek the truth within, not without.”
