A dog is defined as a domesticated carnivorous mammal that typically has a long snout, an acute sense of smell, and a barking, howling, or whining voice. A dog is widely kept as a pet or for work, or field sports. One question that intrigues many is just how many breeds of dogs there are. This is a rather difficult question to answer since many varieties of dogs that might be classifiable as separate breeds are not recognized by the various international kennel clubs and breed registration groups. In 2013, the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) recognized 339 breeds of dogs which are divided into 10 groups based upon the dog’s purpose or function or upon its appearance or size. The Labrador retriever, also known as Lab, is a strongly built, athletic, well-balanced, and stable temperament dog. The Lab is well known for its kindness, friendly eyes, expressing character, intelligence, and good temperament. There are three acceptable colors in Labradors: black, yellow, and chocolate. My dog that I currently own is called a Dudley Lab. A Dudley Lab is a yellow Labrador that lacks black pigment all together and will have brownish or pinkish colored eye rims, foot-pads, nose and lips and they will never turn black. Majority yellow Labs have dark noses during the summers and eventually fade during the winters. However, this process is more commonly seen in northern breeds such as Huskies. In order to determine if a Labrador just has a snow nose or if it is truly a Dudley, you have to check the gum tissue and the eye rims. The gum tissue and eye rims should also lack the pigmentation. Furthermore, the Dudley lab has tan or light pink skin which is different than the typical Labrador. A true Dudley lab has the tendency to get sunburnt easily.
