Ammar Ahmad Mr. Arthur April 2, 2024 Honors English 10. Who Killed Jay Gatsby? In the book, The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald throws the reader back into the roaring 20s and shows the debauchery and foolishness of the people. The people had taken to all forms of entertainment in an attempt to maintain a falsehood of happiness. The most prominent was grandiose parties with alcohol, which was prohibited in the eighteenth amendment making the sale of alcohol illegal. These falsehoods were epitomized by the main character of our story, Jay Gatsby, a man who cheated his way up to get closer to his love, Daisy Buchanan, but ultimately fails and is murdered. In The Great Gatsby, Mr. Gatz, Jay Gatsby’s or Jimmy Gatz’s father is sad about his son's untimely death and talks about who Jimmy was. Mr. Gatz thought that if “he’d lived” Gatsby would’ve been a great man “like James J. Hill” helping “build up the country” with his “brain power” (Fitzgerald 129). Gatsby using his intelligence to create a persona of new money to impress Daisy causes his own death because rather than using his smarts for good, he used them for a gain unrealized and not good for himself. Furthermore, because Gatsby was faking his personality, he could cause his own demise by letting others know about his true self. In the fifth chapter of the Great Gatsby, Jay demonstrates his impatient deposition whilst waiting for Daisy to come to have tea. “Nobody’s coming to tea” Jay miserably says to Nick who argues that Jay is being silly because “it’s just two minutes to four” (Fitzgerald 66). Jay is so incredibly impatient that he is getting angry and miserable after Daisy is just slightly late. His impatience leads to his untimely death because he can not handle pressure and becomes angry and unhinged.
