While George was the man that ended Gatsby's life and the man who ended up pulling the trigger, Tom plays a huge role in planning the events leading up to Gatsby's death. Tom’s manipulation, recklessness and actions created a chain of events that led to the death of Gatsby. It is 100% a fact that he holds the responsibility for the death of Jay Gatsby. In chapter 7 of The Great Gatsby, Tom Buchanan manipulates Daisy and Gatsby by bringing up Gatsby's background and true character.
Although he is a contributor to his death, George Wilson and Daisy Buchanan are ultimately who led to his death. Jay Gatsby is a contributor to his own death because he makes bad decisions to get his dream. An example of a bad decision is when he purposely let Nick stay in his guesthouse and be his neighbor. All he was really doing was using Nick for his own personal gain.

Gatsby using his intelligence to create a persona of new money to impress Daisy causes his own death because rather than using his smarts for good, he used them for a gain unrealized and not good for himself. Furthermore, because Gatsby was faking his personality, he could cause his own demise by letting others know about his true self. In the fifth chapter of the Great Gatsby, Jay demonstrates his impatient deposition whilst waiting for Daisy to come to have tea.
The most shocking moment in the novel The Great Gatsby was ultimately when George Wilson snuck into Gatsby’s backyard and shot him in the back, sending him falling into his pool. If you were to ask a student who was responsible for the murder of Jay Gatsby, they would respond with the answer “George Wilson”. However, simply putting the word “morally” at the front of that question, you can now be provided with several different answers. Any main character in the novel The Great Gatsby, including Nick, Daisy, Tom, or Gatsby himself can be seen as morally responsible for the death of Jay Gatsby besides George Wilson. How would you feel if the woman you worked hard to be with and were deeply in love with was the one morally responsible for your death?
The question of whether someone dies or gets the girl is an important question that is often overlooked. Did Jay die because the author wanted him to; was it just the flow in the book with a recurring theme of mistrust and corruption? With every story, there's an ending, almost always with a death, especially if it's a romantic novel. This will be a mythological and psychoanalysis of why Fitzgerald chose this ending and why most romantic novels end with someone dying and someone getting the girl. It’s amazing that this ending came to such a surprise to anyone that reads it.
In my opinion, Tom is most responsible for Gatsby’s death. I believe that Tom is most responsible because Tom forgot to tell George that Daisy was the driver of Gatsby’s car the night Myrtle was hit by it. Tom forgot to tell George that because him and Daisy were plotting this out. I could tell something was up when Nick refers that “Tom and Daisy talking in the house(146). I also think that Daisy is a little bit responsible because she took on some bad morals when she hit Myrtle because she could have stopped the car after she hit Myrtle.
Jay Gatsby, a wealthy man, was shot dead outside his home this weekend. He was a resident of Long Island, New York but originally from the West. Gatsby served in the Military in World War I and attended Oxford for a short while. He is survived by the father he abandoned, Mr. Gatz. Gatsby also leaves behind his love Daisy Buchanan, wife to Tom Buchanan also from Long Island.
But looking into some of the information about the murderer, we found out that he owned a run down auto shop at the edge of the Valley Of Ashes. The day before he murdered Gatsby, his wife was fatally hit by a speeding yellow car. The yellow car belongs to Tom Buchanan but that day it was used by Gatsby and someone else on board with him. Apparently, Gatsby was intoxicated and hit the women so hard she died, without stopping he continued to drive off. By joining the dots, it is clear that George (the guy whose wife was hit by Gatsby) wanted revenge for his wife's death.
As defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a protagonist is “the principal character in a literary work (as a drama or a story).” The principal character and protagonist in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is most certainly Jay Gatsby, as defined by the title of the novel itself. Although Nick Carraway is the novel’s narrator, as the narrative is told through his thoughts and perceptions, it is Jay, who certainly is not the most upstanding person in the world, who facilitates the story, allowing Tom Buchanan to become the foreshadowed antagonist. Without Jay, there is no story to tell, as he is the driving force in the progression of the storyline and the character with who the readers can empathize with.

In the court of law there’s only one person who was responsible and guilty for the murder of Jay Gatsby. Although in the eyes of god there was more than one person responsible for the murder or had the ability to stop the outcome of the murder. Weather it was Tom being honest about his affair, Daisy doing the right thing and stopping during the accident or Jay Gatsby himself by taking control of the situation and doing what was good for both Daisy and himself instead of just what 's best for Daisy. Tom, Myrtle, Daisy, and Gatsby were selfish and self centered leading them to become Morally responsible for the death of Jay Gatsby.
In fact, by trying to save Daisy, even though George Wilson officially murdered Jay Gatsby, Jay Gatsby himself was truly at fault for his demise. Jay's obsession with Daisy Buchanan, a woman married to Tom Buchanan, blinds and leads him to cover for Daisy after she runs Myrtle over with Gatsby’s car, driving George Wilson to seek vengeance and kill Gatsby.
