Resistance in Family Therapy
Per Gladding (2015) resistance is the refusal to accept something new or different. In family counseling, resistance could be a problem for the counselor as well as client. Opposition to behavioral changes, solving problems, and dealing with emotions is an expected issue that every counselor will face when working with a client (Stonehouse, 2012). Some reasons for resistance may be the client does not adapt to change well, or they could have a fear of failing from taking a risk, or they be resisting change by trying to manipulate the situation as they have always done in their personal life (Firoozmand, 2014).
