As the current system of modern living stands, society is incapable of functioning properly without, at the very least, a modicum of respect. Such, is the importance of this respect that we often find that its departure can lead to the breakdown of the social structure.
Respect, is a key component of human interaction, especially when it comes to relationships. According to participants in the Palo Alto Medical Foundation summer wellness program, respect allows couples to “have the freedom to be themselves, talk honestly and freely, and make decisions and compromises together,” (PAMF 1) As a result of mutual respect, individuals in a relationship can expect to see a general increase in the quality of their interactions. As mentioned by Harvard psychology professor, Ellen J. Edgar, “With self-respect, we like ourselves because of who we are and not because of what we can or cannot do.” (Edgar 1) Self respect leads to a more content lifestyle, a strengthened resolve to lead a legacy that is defined by personal goals. What does not need a Harvard professor for evidence however, is the effect of self respect on happiness. Self respect is one of the less obscure components of leading an a more joyful existence. Without it, people end up in unwanted commitments and lead with a mind filled with resentment and discontent. Angela Duckworth, in her book “Grit,” is particularly mindful of this phenomenon. She often notes that an important part of success is the ability to enjoy what you do and persevere through obstacles. How can this be accomplished if one does not believe in their own abilities or actions? The productive and efficient components of a society would evidently be impacted by a decrease in happiness and its byproduct - declining success .
