Thomas Morton’s article, Oh This Is Great, wants people to have a greater understanding on what’s going in our world. People need to understand that our ocean is a pile of trash. As Morton stated, “The ocean is downstream of everything.” Considering the fact, people are thoughtlessly tossing their trash onto the floor, are sadly ending up into the ocean- where our food chain is greatly affected by.
These solid wastes specifically trash such as plastics, fishing wire, and rope are carried down the river and into the Sound and from there pulled into the ocean. Though it may seem as though it isn’t the large of a deal the trash floating over time breaks down but is never fully ridden from the water. This mean that if for example a water bottle were to float into the North Atlantic, the sun over time would help to break down the bonds of the plastic and eventually the plastic would completely dissolve, now this were the problem comes in no longer do you have just one piece of plastic but instead you have tiny pieces of plastic scattered throughout a wider area of the ocean than you did before. The introduction of these solid materials can result in a decrease in biodiversity as animals ingest the small plastic particles or get tangled up in rope, wire or plastic. It can also result in a huge payout of money by the State of North Carolina in an effort to clean up their shores.
The Importance of Conseil The explanation to why Conseil is one of the most important characters in 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. In the novel, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the character Conseil is described variously as Sir Arronax’s “servant”, “accomplice”, and “friend.” Conseil is thought of by many as the secondary character, or a side-kick, or in general someone who does nothing for the story.
Sarah Freeman’s article in The Ethicalist explains the negative effects humans have on the ocean. These negative effects include plastic pollution, global warming, and worst of all, overfishing. Overfishing occurs when a fish species is wild caught faster than it can reproduce. This leads to fewer fish in the ocean, meaning less marine biodiversity (Freeman). After Freeman spends most of her article explaining how the oceans are suffering, she then starts talking about what can be done to prevent a baren sea.
Luke Gormsen AP Lang Ms. Clark 2/1/23 Role of Water in Gem of the Ocean In Act 1 of Gem of the Ocean by August Wilson, water plays the role of cleansing wrongdoings and washing away misdeeds performed against an individual. First, water and, specifically the act of cleansing, is used to symbolize forgiveness for wrongdoings and a way to obtain a clean slate in life. An example of this aspect of water is shown when Citizen Barlow seeks help from Aunt Esther to help him become a better person through her healing, saying, “They say you can wash people’s souls…I was gonna go to another city but before I had the chance I killed a man.
As I walked into the vicinity of the woods, I looked behind me and into the distance before I entered. I stared at the stormy, low lying, smoky clouds that blanketed the sun and prevented its light from creeping through. The baby blue sky and the ray of light that poked out from the edges of the clouds lit up the day. The openness of the surroundings that laid outside the woods became absorbed into my mind and I began to think. I realized that there is so much more out there in the world and the universe.
One of Thoreau’s basic ideas Socrates would agree with is that a man should always take actions which his conscience deems righteous regardless of the magnitude of their consequences. In Apology, Socrates showed no remorse that his deeds have put him on a trial because he believed that a wise man who knows that he has done nothing wrong should not fear death itself. He would certainly agree with Henry Thoreau who wrote in his essay, “Civil Disobedience”, that it is way more important to seek justice in this world than respect the laws which a man earnestly condemns. Thoreau discussed the unpopularity people possess for the men who act according to their own values and Socrates claimed to be one of these men as he refused to defy his morals
Gilded age Gilded age coastline has been losing its wetlands at a rate of 16.57 square miles a year during the past 25 years, equal to the loss of a football field of coast every hour. This loss of wetlands is due to pollution, deforestation, and erosion. The loss has caused has caused loss of biodiversity. Louisiana has lost 1900 years ago of land because of pollution from landfills, factory waste, and erosion.
From these readings I have found that John Muir and Henry David Thoreau have many of the same notions about nature and the American frontier. Both viewed nature as a defined space, completely separated from civil society, a place in which “a man can be a man.” For Muir it seemed that nature was very much a sacred space and loved to idealize nature as a sort of heaven on earth. I think one of the biggest things I realized through these readings is that Muir and Thoreau both emphasized the difference, physically and mentally, between nature and urbanization. It is this idea that Americans now live on, I believe that people now think of nature and urban areas as entirely separate entities and in doing so, make nature into a sort of place to visit but never stay.
This article highlights the reasons behind the decline of coastal wetlands in multiple locations throughout the Western-Hemisphere. For example, Bildstein et al. state that in the Everglades, contamination of the soil is threatening the wild-life and plant-life in the wetlands in that area. In addition, the article also analyzes methods that specific organizations have created to help in the conservation of wetlands.
The following are some specific actions that can be taken to restore habitats: Wetlands are important habitats for many species in the bay, but they have been degraded by development and other human activities. To restore wetlands, it is important to implement restoration projects that involve removing invasive species, planting native vegetation, and restoring
States can be heavily impacted by all of this wetland destruction. For example, Louisiana, approximately 40 percent of the country’s total wetlands area are located in Louisiana. It sates in the passage “Wetlands and Habitat Loss” that Louisiana is located at the drainage gateway where the Mississippi River meets the Gulf of Mexico. This is why Louisiana holds such a great percentage of the United States Everglades. If you take away wetlands in states like Louisiana, then there would no longer be anywhere for natural habitats to inhabit creatures that need that type of environment to survive.
Louisiana wetlands’ are currently undergoing catastrophic environmental issues. It’s major environmental problem is the loss of its wetland. Louisiana’s wetland loss has been occurring for thousands of years. Many organisms have been affected by this loss. Most organisms loose their habitats, while others unfortunately die out.
“ Natural gas industry has been identified as a major source of water pollution “ ( source 1 ). This quote from source 1 explains how out of all the ways of polluting the oceans, oil is always one of the worst. “ 8 million metric tons of plastic trash enters the sea from land every year “ ( source 4 ). This quote from source number 4 explains how every year tons and tons of plastic from land, gets into the oceans and continues to pollute. Garbage is polluting the oceans so much that the water is getting so bad, people are getting ill from drinking
Hemingway presents the elements of failure and suffering in The Old Man and the Sea by depicting several instances of suffering and failure which the Old Man, Santiago, has to go through throughout the course of the novel. According to Hemingway, life is just one big struggle. In the beginning of the novel itself, The Old Man, is presented as a somewhat frail old man who is still struggling with his life as well as his past failures. His skiff even had a sail which bore great resemblance to “the flag of permanent defeat”, with its multiple patches all over.
