First, it is important to understand what universal healthcare is. It can be defined in three parts: 1. All have access to healthcare, regardless of the ability to pay. 2. The quality of care received, should improve their health.
Everyone needs to have an easy access to health care at some point and our tax money should benefit us from it. We should no longer need a “pass” to see a doctor and to be treated nor we should worry about expensive bill while struggling to be healthy at the same time. According to an article called “33 Million Americans Still Don’t Have Health Insurance”, the authors points out that there are 33 million Americans, which make up 10.4 percent of total U.S population have not yet been covered with healthcare (Anna Maria Barry-Jester and Ben Casselman, 2014). Although we have many reforms such as the Obamacare that were enacted by our president Barack Obama on March 2010 that aim to provide everyone with an affordable healthcare.
Patients with untreated chronic illnesses would only be treated when their symptoms were severe enough to require emergent care due to lack of insurance. Exorbitant hospital charges would be given to patients who were insured but had a $1000 deductible to be seen in an emergency room. As a nurse it is my job to protect and advocate for theses patients. Even on a personal level, I have been treated in a hospital with insurance and have been billed $15,000 for a procedure that the insurance company refused to pay. Although preventative care and educating my patients has always been the focus in my practice, As a seasoned nurse and future APRN, I plan on taking a more active role as an activist and advocate for universal healthcare for all residents of this
I can accept that. What I will refuse to accept is someone who doesn’t have as much economic privilege that my family has to be denied health insurance because they can’t afford it. There are many people who are victims of circumstance who have been unable to afford health insurance, and often times this is because of a health condition that prevents them from working. In this scenario, universal health care would help to alleviate this problem, and allow for the individual to get to work.
