Response to “The Importance of Sleep”

As the media develops and objects referred to as distractors become more relevant in today's world, it has become hard for us to focus on what should truly be valued in our priorities. A big mistake a lot of us offer up is our sleep, however in “The Importance of Sleep '' composed by Luke Davis, he discusses the significance of putting your personal distractors away early and getting the recommended amounts of sleep as you will learn, comes with many benefits. In this multi genre article, he discusses the stages of sleep, the benefits that come out of going to bed earlier, and his personal experience with the benefits he listed. He does so by bringing himself to the piece, putting himself into character. Davis writes to his future self portraying the message that he has fallen as a victim to those who lack sleep and could benefit from putting things that distract him down, things such as his phone and social media.
Davis’ multi genre composition creates effectiveness by the use of rhetorical devices. One of the rhetorical devices that his opening letter appeals to is ethos. Due to his arrival as a character to the readers in which he later responds to, Davis leans towards an inner monologue facing inner conflict within the context of sleep. This works in the sense of ethos because Davis writes of his own conflicts and this works to inspire others and feel a connection. Logos representing evidence and information were represented at the very end of this composition by providing six benefits of sleep in which include, “getting sick less often, looking better, having more energy, maintaining healthy weight, avoiding health problems, and being more positive in your outlooks.” Ending this piece with logos causes readers to have a final understanding as to why it is important to get more sleep. Using logos towards the beginning of the composition and at the very end is a good way to keep readers influenced and engaged because they know that what is being said has been analyzed closely and being taken into consideration by others who may have had the same
