Since he didn 't want to cause anymore trouble than there already was, he decided to accept the blame and carry it on his shoulders all alone. The Glass Castle is a memoir that was written by Jeannette Walls, who explains how within her childhood grew up extremely poor and had an alcoholic father, a mother who took advice from no one, and had three siblings, Brian , Lori, and Maureen. Rex and Rose Mary Walls show signs of being permissive or uninvolved parents by having very few demands, neglect to the children's needs, and letting their children make their own decisions. Throughout her memoir, Jeannette had multiple occasions were herself or her siblings would have to fend for themselves, because Rex or Rose Mary refused to hold on to a job. For example “When we wanted money, we walked along the roadside picking up beer cans and bottles that we redeemed for two cents each.”
In addition, In his journal he says that he misses his brother and he wants to be with him but he can’t because he is in jail. The book said, “I wish Jerry were here. Not in jail, but somehow with me.” (Myers 205). It proves he is good because he cares about his family.
He's trying to make the football team as quarterback and is motivated to do good in his schoolwork. He is also dealing with the recent loss of his mother and tries to be the best son he can to his dad. However, Jerry is not very impressed with his dad’s way of life. He worries about ending up like his dad and always doing the same old thing every day.
The reader can infer that Mother tended to blame others for the Airedale’s(Muggs) actions by reading the scenarios of each blame and seeing that Mother was always sending the blame back on the person that Muggs attacked. Thurber adds many details about the way that Mother reacts to Mugg’s actions and he really shows how the family feels to not only the Mother 's’ reactions, but towards the person that Muggs has attacked. The reader can speculate the emotions of the family and the Mother’s emotions towards the Airedale. In paragraph 5 it explains how one morning the iceman came to the house and Muggs had bit the iceman as he was dropping off a block of ice. “If you didn’t think he would bite you, he wouldn’t, Mother told him.”
He is very compassionate. He helped Mayella with random jobs all of the time because he wanted to. She offered to pay him for his work, but he told her that it was not necessary and he did not want money from her. However, throughout the story, Jerry's actions speak louder than his words. Even though he is the protagonist, Jerry remains a very buttoned-up character throughout the whole story. What he does within his time at the school, brings out quite the heavy talking.
Carol made many parental mistakes. One mistake she made was taking advantage of Melinda for her own benefit. When Carol and Melinda go see John, Carol wants Melinda to convince John to get them a portable TV; “ My mother knew. “See if you can get him to buy the TV,” she said. “I bet they’ve got one for sale right nearby” (124).
Sometimes people don’t realize how much their decisions and choices can effect others around them. Parenting is one of these such cases. The thought of having to raise children is loved by many people, but it is often a feared reality. Many people don’t see themselves as being capable of being a parent, even though they are very capable of being a good parent. Some of the best examples of good parenting fall into the book To Kill a Mockingbird.
Jerry’s relationship with his dad allows him to be himself in the face of Archie and the student body. Jerry is bullied by Archie and the student body because he will not accept the chocolates. Jerry stands up for himself because he does not not want to be like his father, because his father is boring and doesn't know what to do with his life, or how to be happy. After Jerry's mother died his father became unhappy and depressed and described everything as “fine”. Jerry realizes he wants to his life to be filled with happiness and described as better than fine.
Parents play a major role in a child’s life. Parents affect how their child behaves and who they become as they grow older. The ideal parent should be an attentive listener, have a positive attitude and love their child unconditionally. Firstly, I think that parents should always listen to their kids no matter what or else they will feel neglected.
