Restricted Use of Force
The UN peacekeepers are not allowed to use force, except in limited terms, as provided for by the Security Council. Apart from using excessive force to defend themselves, peacekeepers are also allowed by the Security Council to use their arms to deter the use of force by any of the party to disrupt the existing political process . Moreover, when civilian lives are under threat, the peacekeepers are allowed to use force. Furthermore, the peacekeepers can be allowed to help national authorities to keep law and order.

The council can review the terms of operation depending on the kind of conflict. Some conflicts have greater challenges, and thus demanding a more aggressive approach. The most famous Security Council resolutions that have guided the operation of the UN peacekeepers include the 1325(2000) that observed the peace and security of women and the 1612(2005) of children and the armed conflict at the same time. It also includes the 1674(200) that regarded the protection of civilians who were in armed conflicts . As envisaged earlier, the tasks that are assigned to the UN are often in tandem with the pattern of conflict that exists on the ground. Thus, the Security Council is also guided by such patterns when providing instructions to the Security Council. Largely, peacekeeping has positively impacted many nations through the protection of human rights of the suffering population.
