Shots flew through the air, horses screeched, and blood splattered. It was The War on Powder River, written by Helena Huntington Smith, where independent cow herders in a battle against large corporations and other independent ranchers. It was fought over land, cattle, and reputation and it was bloody. A shot from a high caliber rifle cracked through the cold dawn, sheep scattered, and blood from a young man splattered. The killer’s shot was a hit and was written about in the fictional book Cold Dish, by Craig Johnson.
In Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns the historical context unravels before the eyes of the reader as time grows more modern. When reading the story one sees that many things have changed over time. One may witness that the use of automobiles are just coming about, along with the use of indoor plumbing. As the story goes along, the author explains the historical context of a small southern town in 1906.
Jon Spoelestra’s Ice to the Eskimos was very interesting and informative. Throughout the entire book, Spoelestra reflected upon the experiences and knowledge that he gained from working in the sports industry. One interesting aspect of the book was Spoelestra’s principle that organizations should design “an offer that consumers cannot refuse” (Spoelestra, 1997, p. 199). This was particularly interesting to me because of my interest in finance. Initially, I thought that if you make an offer too good, that you could potentially be losing out on some profit, however, after reading this book, this principle makes perfect sense.
Archeology is the study of a human body analysis, which identifies many different characteristics detected through evidence of holism during the process of investigation of archeologists. To determine the life of the Iceman, also known as Otzi, would be to rely on his remains also found under the glacier, along with the discovery of his body, such as, a knife stone, arrows, copper axe and shoes of grass. At first glance these remains do not seem enough clues to determine anything about Otzi's life, but just studying the individual object like the copper axe shows he was probably a high dignity being in order to carry such equipment, which was used in the early stone age years for farming and hunting. Though the book In Cold Blood is a non-fictional account of a murder case, the author uses strange combinations of words to create a more surreal description of the whole situation. For example, Perry’s intense urge to kill the driver as they were hitchhiking is translated into the strange word combination as, “He thought he might vomit, or faint; he felt certain he would if Dick delayed "the party" much longer. The light was dimming, the road was straight, with neither house nor human being in view - nothing but land winter-stripped and as somber as sheet iron,” (107). The description of the land creates an ominous scene; a perfect setting to commit a murder.
In the book Brian 's winter the main character is Brian from the book Hatchet. Brian 's winter is a spin of book telling the story of him if he wasn 't rescued at the end of Hatchet and had to last the winter in the woods. This book was made to the people wondering what would 've happen to brian if he wasn 't rescued. Brian 's Winter shows how tough he has to be able to survive and make it through the winter.
The reader also learns that August wants to include everyone. In meal scenes, readers can get to know more than just one character. For example, readers also learn about the character Summer. They learn that she is gentle and cares about people’s feeling. Also, that she also loves to joke around and have fun.

Rather become a man of value”. Implying that people tend to get blinded in the hunt of personal triumph in their lives that they forget what really is important to them. Similarly, in Alfie Kohn’s How “Not to Get into College”, Daniel Barwick’s “The So Called Iced Cream” and Heron Jones’s “Somnambulist”, the authors develop the message that, people assume that chasing external rewards equals joy and satisfaction in their lives.
The novel 's plot is driven by Janie 's series of relationships with different men: a kiss with Johnny Taylor, followed by marriages with Logan Killicks, Jody Starks and finally, Tea Cake. Logan Killicks and Jody Starks see Janie as defined by her relationship with them, and expect her to be obedient, silent and proper. Jody sees her as a kind of ornament that bolsters his social standing and that helps to justify his efforts to assert control over everyone, men and women alike. Tea Cake, in contrast, defines himself not by political power but rather by his physical strength and ability to have fun. Even while Tea Cake treats Janie as an equal, there still exists a certain power struggle in Janie 's relationship with him, as her increasing ability to recognize her needs as an individual throughout the novel emerges in response to Tea Cake 's treatment of her.
For clarity, it says that Bronwyn, Cooper, Addy and Nate will be doing a secret meeting to find out who is the real killer. Through many events and changes Nate Macauley has been through, he has been falsely accused and has been sent to jail. The unpredictable announcement has got to Bronwyn and she was doing everything in her power to prove Nate innocent. This period can stay for thousands or millions of years. The oceans and seas are frozen and the temperature is cooled. Also many sources of fresh water were locked behind those ice sheets.
In the short story “What happened during the Ice Storm?” showed a theme of maturation using literary elements, specifically irony, symbolism, and the application of onomatopoeias were used to support the theme of maturation. The literary element irony is mostly used in the short story “What happened during the Ice Storm?” originally the boys wanted to hurt the pheasants like the author says, “They stood over the pheasants, turning their own heads, looking at each other, each expecting the other to do something. To pounce on a pheasant, or to yell Bang!” This quote is important because it showed the boys original intent; which was to hurt or kill the pheasants.
The book I choice to read was, “Brian’s Winter”, by Gary Paulsen. This book is about Brian after the private plane he was flying in crashes in to the rugged forests of Canada. Brian went through many struggles while trying the best he could to survive in the harsh environment. Some of the biggest events in this story include when he is attacked by a bear, during the major storms and some of his questionable encounters with the wolves. If I were telling a friend about the entire story in two minutes I would say, Brian’s parents were divorced leading him to visit his father for the first time in a long time.
“You can get an ice cream headache from drinking or eating something cold too fast” – Jimmy “Ice Cream Headache” – When I first heard about the title of the book I was a bit confused and also curious about the choice of the author, why? Why a unique title like this? – was my first question. Because it is the title which makes you read and pay some attention to this story first of all.
