Reverend Jesse Jackson gave an inspirational speech Friday, March 3, 2017, at Montevallo High School as part of his visit to Alabama celebrating the fifty-second annual commemoration march in Selma known as Bloody Sunday. Students at Montevallo High witnessed history in the making. Reverend Jesse Jackson visited the school with late noticed, but his message on civil right was far from last minute.
Ordinarily, the stage set, podium in the middle and four chairs on either side. A few seated included Montevallo Mayor, Hollie Cost, Montevallo High principle, Brandon Turner, and Bobby Perison. In his speech the reverend makes many biblical statements. He also insinuated that we as a whole must humble ourselves. One of the Reverends main points being that we have adapted the English language into our own and resent others for not learning the language, but by no means is English is superior, for Jesus did not speak English, nor were the Ten Commandments written in English.
One student by the name Madeline Griffin made the comment “Some may not agree with the reverend, but he makes a good point.” Time after time, Jackson makes bold statements that made the audience reflect on their own life. moreover, Jackson asked all of the legal age to come forward to him and register to vote. Jackson encouraged all of these young students to be the change in their communities. The reverend then proceeds to answer an questions the students had. Many questions were sensitive subjects for a gathering so large, but Jackson answered all with wisdom and guidance only a true historical icon could produce.
